The only way you are going to get a birch stock is if it happens to be on a rifle you buy.
The stock sets the CMP sells are walnut. You can buy one without metal for $118.95 plus shipping OR with new metal for $149.95 plus shipping. They are finished with what the CMP says is a coat of linseed oil. They also have NM sets that are UNfinished. AJ |

B/c from the tiny picture of them on CMP e-store it looks like the lineseed oil finish is a very like finish almost wood grain like. Like the one in the middle in the picture above. |
| I have two Garand stocks, one is what I believe to be WW2 issue and the other is a Boyds stock. The original stock feels thinner than the Boyds stock. Why is that? Couls it be from arsenal rebuilds and its age? Or, does Boyds leave the rest of the sanding and shaping to the buyer? |

Boyd's commercial stocks are HUGELY fat. The ones they make for the CMP are much better.... but still not as thin as an original GI If you want wood that is close to post war GI wood in contours, then get a wood set from Wenig. A bit more $$$ but vastly better quality wood.... and more choices of wood type and grain structure too. Anything from plain jane to eye-popping. Just to add to Swampy's post...... Here is a Wenig standard walnut stock set that I purchased unfinished and BLOed myself while waiting for work to be finished on the rifle. Dean at DGR did all the fit work on it and it dropped in with no additional fitting needed. This would be the "plain jane" end of the spectrum. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/0903/johnrippert/Garand308a.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/0903/johnrippert/Garand308.jpg That is a beautiful rifle. Did you buy the stock and then send it to DGR or did you get it from them? |

I was looking at Wenig's website and I don't see a place to buy unfinished Garand stocks. |

This was bought from Dean at DGR as a fitted unfinished standard walnut Wenig stock set.
DGR Go to the STOCKS page. The prices are a lot higher now than they were when I bought mine, but IMO well worth the money. |
