Has anyone had experience with the grade D stripped receivers.  I thought about buying a Winchester and building an all Winchester parts M1.

What is the quality of the grade D typically?  How hard is it to install a barrel?  Should it be done by a gunsmith?

I have heard no complaints. The grade D are reparkerized, meaning refinished. The ones I have seen people receive were of excellent condition, smooth black finish. The Grade A are original finishes and I have have heard no complaints on those either. The CMP will make sure you are happy.

If you are looking to build a shooter, I'd say to go with the grade D.

As far as the barrel, it will depend on a couple things.

Is it a take off USGI barrel, a new match type barrel?

As the minimum you'll need a armorer wrench, and barrel vise. You also need to check headspace. There may be finishing proceedures that will be needed to be dome such as chamber reaming etc.

I'd say if you were gonna build just one M1, the cost of tools and the learning curve would justify using an armorer to build it for you.
