Howdy all,

I am considering purchasing a Field Grade M1 and was wondering generally how long it takes to receive a rifle that is listed as in-stock. College classes are going to come to an end in a month and a half, and I will be moving somewhere else for the summer. Not sure where to list as my shipping address depending on the time.

Thanks!

I mailed my packet and cashier's check off on Feb 10th and the rifle showed up on my doorstep on March 7th.  My case of Greek ammo arrived on Friday the 10th.  This was for a Greek return Field Grade rifle and between weather, work and birthdays I STILL haven't gotten to take it to the range.

I ordered a Springfield rack grade USGI in the first week of February or so. They were in stock when I sent the order, but like two or three weeks after that, the website listed them as "backordered." I guess three weeks wasn't enough time to "get in." I'm still waiting for anything...the rifle, notification, whatever. I called a few weeks ago to get an update and the lady I talked to said like two words, "it's backordered," and that was that. The only other time I've dealt with the CMP was like a year ago. That time, they actually lost my order and it took about three phone calls and two or three months for me to get a rifle that was "in stock, ready to ship."

I like the end results (i.e., actually getting the M1), but frankly, thus far I really haven't enjoyed the events leading up to the end result.

i ordered rifles the 9th of march.  still no update on the website indicating my order has been or is being processed.  i ordered 2 service grades and 1 field grade, as well as as .22 single shot target rifle.

i called last week the nice lady who answered the phone indicated that she was just not putting the orders in the system for the 12th of march, and they received mine on the 13th of march.  it's not in the system yet, and it's the 25th now... slowest service so far...

Mailed off my first Garand order via Priority Mail on 9 January, arrived at CMP 3 days later.
Received email notice from CMP that my order had been received on 19 January.
Recived order acknowledgement on 24 January, stating that my order would soon ship.
FedEx truck with HRA correct grade and SA Field grade arrived 27 January.
Total time from receipt of order to delivery...about two weeks.

Have placed several ammo orders online with CMP in the past two months.  They arrive in about a week.

Mailed another order for a Winchester field grade on 14 March.
Received email notice from CMP on 17 March.
Recived order acknowledgement on 23 March, stating that my order would soon ship.
I imagine it will be here tomorrow or Tuesday or Wednesday.
This will make another approximate two week delivery.   Not too shabby.

With a month and a half to go, I'd have no qualms about ordering and having it sent to your current address.  If for some reason it looks like you'll move before it arrives, you can always call them and update your address accordingly.

I've called and spoke with various order personnel and one of the armorers and have yet to receive anything except polite and professional assistance.

What does "It's backordered" mean on the status sheet?  Is that a normal part of processing?

I ordered my Greek SG SA nearly a month ago, and at the time they appeared to be in stock.  Backordered doesn't sound good.

Normal? Well, it IS becoming more and more common, but no, "backordered" is not normal. "Backordered" means it could take you up to three months from the time they processed your order for you to finally get your M1.

Welcome to "the waiting room." I've been here for close to two months now myself, and there's no sign whatsoever of things speeding up. So grab a seat,  pick a magazine, and listen to the dentist's office music, cause it's gonna be a while....

I have been watching this and other forums and this is a common theme. i was ready to place an order, but I think that I will either wait for the South Store to open, or try catching a decent deal at a gunshow. I am seeing too many reports of worn parts and unserviceable bores. I would rather pay a premium at a gunshow and KNOW what I am buying than to put my money on the CMP pass line.

ok, left the office in an envelope 3.9.06, just posted today, order date of 3.28.06, and they charged the cc for the field grade and the .22 rifle.

in the past this means relatively quick shipping.

so far, i have only ordered service grades, and have been well pleased with what i've gotten out of the BWTs.  i stepped down 1 grade to field grade this time, with the thought that i may well send this one to DGR and have it remanufactured into a stunner.  we'll see.

FWIW, i have had absolutely **no** problems with cmp quality in any of the 6 rifles i've gotten from them.  all have functioned reliably out of the box.  and i've got 3 for 1, if you do gun show prices...

good shape SA garand in central texas runs 12-1500 easy...

looking forward to shooting pigs quite soon.  it's ALWAYS pig season in texas.

waiting a month or two or three or four to save hundeds of dollars is fine by me.  My order was received Thursday for 1 service grade and 1 field grade, I went the CMP route after seeing beat up Garands for sale at a local dealer for $1,000 bucks.

Excuse my ignorance but when you order through CMP, do they acually ship the gun directly to you or your FFL? . Thanks.
4/1/2006 3:23:18 PM EDT
[#14]
Shipped to you, not via an FFL.

The CMP does the instant check, etc....

If your location has extra requirements, then they must also be followed.

Mailed CMP docs on Mar 7, 06 for a SPringfield Greek issue
Received email notification the order was rec'd MAr 30, 06

Here's mine thus far.

Mailed forms Monday 3/27.  Email acknowledgement 4/4.  One rifle should be here in the next couple weeks, the other one said 60-90 days.  We'll see!

From my experience:
6 separate orders placed, 5 orders recieved, this goes for rifles and ammo CMP does not charge your CC until they are shipping your order. If your credit card has been charged, the order is shipping out within a day or two.
I haven't purchased the field or rack grade, but I've bought a total of 15 correct and service grade rifles with one collector purchased. NONE of my rifles have gauged more than 3 on Throat or Muzzle erosion, the majority have gauged under 2. Even if you go rack or field, you can purchase a new barrel from a variety of sources,  have it installed and still be WAY under the $1,000 or more most dealers are asking at "fun" shows.
CMP is a first class operation, with Customer Service their TOP priority. They want to sell rifles, and they want you as a happy returning customer.
FYI, should you purchase any grade rifle from them, and upon cleaning and inspection you find ANYTHING broken, contact them, they will replace that part free of charge. I had one gas cylinder that had been painted with cheap black paint. I had no clue until I upon cosmoline removal, the paint came off along with the cosmoline. I notified them by email, I was told to send it back, and my replacement is due to hit tomorrow via FedEx, along with two replacement operating springs.  I purhased 4 rifles at once, the badly finished gas cylinder was found about a month after I recieved the rifles. No hassles, no problems.
Unbelievable: While I was typing this, the Fex Ex truck showed up a day early, the replacement gas cylinder looks brand new, the operating rod springs have cosmoline on them, but they will be good to go after a wipe down.
I've yet to do business with ANY company that has offered better customer service than the CMP.
It's refreshing to say the least.
They say it's luck of the draw. I've never won anything EVER, but every rifle I've  purchased from CMP I consider a winner.
IMHO

I've bought 2-M1's from CMP (an another after tax rebate comes in) and had nothing but a great experience with them. My '44 ('65 new barrel from RRA) FG USGI Springfield shoots fantastic and my '55 SG Greek is a looker but doesn't as well as the Springfield. I want another USGI Springfield, RG or FG and convert to 308.

Sarko in NJ is getting sick money for M1's. Mutt M1's are $700+, FG's / SG's $1,000 easy, CG's $2,000. I don't know if they are selling them, but if they are....me thinks 8 M1's might be bought this year.

Oh c'mon!
Since "the first week in February or so" it has been 2-1/2 months, certainly not "close to four months".

Since Thursday, Feb 2nd it has been 11 weeks, or 77 days. The CMP website says delivery in 90-180 days. You have another two weeks before you hit their earliest delivery projections.

On the other hand.... If you cancel yours, then the USGI racker I ordered along with the Greek return will get to me that much faster

Whoops, yes you're right. Somehow I must have added an extra month in that quick addition in my head.

I wouldn't really care if it weren't for the fact that I'm trying to convince myself to divert most/all firearms money to ammo buying. I can't decide what's more at risk of going dry: CMP's Garand inventory, or the market's ammo supplies. Also, when I sent in the order (and roughly 2-3 weeks after I sent it), there was no "backorder" discalimer. I just wish that two - three weeks would've been enough to process an order. I've never been able to figure out why it takes the CMP so (comparatively) insanely long to process a single order, when people like AIM surplus or Atlantic Firearms can do it in about a day.

no big deal.... i'll either re-finish the stock, or replace it.  though it's somewhat important, the wood is not my #1 concern, the receiver is.  as long as the rec is in good shape, the rest is details and can be replaced.  i will make a beautiful shooter out of it FOR SURE!

I sent my racker off to DGR yesterday for a complete package deal with the high-end wood.   (is it done yet??)

The wood that came with my racker is original GI, though it is in rough shape. Only the circle-P stamp is still legible. The two handguards are a complete loss due to old repairs.

The barrel is also rough - which is the reason why it's a racker.
All the other metal parts (save the butt-plate) are in great shape. The trigger group looks new. The action has most of its finish. The op-rod is rubbing against the lower band, though otherwise in good shape. All other internal parts look great. It should be a great shooter when I get it back.

I only speak from experience. My Greek service grade H&R's stock has a crack along the length of the forearm (not the stock, the piece of wood that's closest to the muzzle), and the stock looks like some Greek guy with steel mandibles tried to eat it for lunch every day.

Oh yeah, BTW: your parade is my urinal.
