Never bought anything from the CMP before but I've been bitten by the Garand bug again. I've got all the required paperwork and am considering road-tripping to the Anniston store next Thursday (1/8) to pick up a Service grade HRA and some ammo. Got a few questions. Was gonna post this on the CMP Forum, but it is down right now.
-Anything special I need to know about going to the store? -Should I expect long lines on a Thursday? -Do I need to be there before they open? -Couple of buddies want to go along to look. Do they need to meet all the requirements to get into the store even if they are not buying anything? -Looking hard at the Greek ammo already on the enbloc clips. I noticed that it attracts a magnet. Is the bullet steel core or does it have some ferrous metal in the jacket? Any words of wisdom about the Greek stuff vs the LC? -Anybody have any luck reloading the brass from the Greek ammo? I have a good supply of CCI #34's and H4895 on hand that I use for my M1A. Any info would be much appreciated. Thanks. |

With the increase in sales that the CMP is experiencing I would say get there early. The on line information states that the Greek ammo may attract a magnet. However, all that I have purchased has definitely been steel jacketed. Reloading Greek brass, the primer crimp will need to be removed or swaged but it reloads just great. The Greek 30-06 seems to be loaded a little hotter than the Lake City. As far as accuracy it is like any other ammunition, some rifles will like it better than others, but over all the accuracy is certainly acceptable. Buy all the ammo that you can, you will not beat the price and it is not going to be around forever. Like every other source out there, the CMP is selling ammunition at rates that it has never seen before. Large supplies of surplus military 30-06 are going to get more difficult for the CMP to come by. The Garands will still be available for a quite awhile but those that are in better condition may soon be gone. Always glad to see that another shooter has decided to add one of the most revered combat rifles ever made to their collection.

I am also considering making the journey to the CMP South.
I assume any CMP organization I join will have some sort of membership card. So I will need that and my drivers license, but what will I need to prove past military service? Will an expired mil ID card be enough? Please don't tell me I need a notorized DD214 or something crazy also will I just go in and buy one? Will I get to pick it from many? will there be any problems because I'll be from out of state I don't have a passport and may not be able to easily find a copy of my birth certificate. will drivers license, past military ID, CCW permit, and organization membership card be enough? |

My one thought is about the expired military ID. Their requirements indicate current or retired military but unsure as to someone who once served but didn't retire. That may suffice for shooting experience but not sure about Club membership requirements. Maybe someone else may have some further insight.
I wrote an email to CMP in December asking about membership status as a retired member. Here is what they sent me back: "CMP has four requirements for purchase: age over 18, US citizenship, firearms related activity, and membership in a CMP affiliated organization. The military services are CMP special affiliates (to include retirees). A legible photocopy (Xerox) of your military ID card (front and back, satisfies age, firearms related activity, citizenship and club membership. Anyone holding a military active duty, retiree, reserve or guard ID card is not required to join another club." |
