The CMP ships their Garands with nifty little yellow plastic chamber flags to show the range masters that you are clear before going down range.

After ripping off enough clips to melt the cosmoline out of my handguards...I wondered if putting one of these in the chamber with the plastic rod down the barrel is unsafe because the plastic might melt to the inside of the barrel. I just stopped using it at that point.

Of course the way to safeguard against this is to simply lock open the chamber and not worry about the flags.

However....

Did this occur to anyone else?!?!?

Ever hear of a "BOOM" due to this?!?!?

I've been using them for years in all types of rifles and never had any indication of them melting.  I would think that the plastic used would be resistant to the heat in rifle chambers.

They have also been a requirement in most competitions and have been used by the thousands.  I've never heard of a problem.

My garand (purchased several years ago) did NOT come with a chamber flag.  In fact I've been looking for those flags and finding them is difficult.  CMP has an item called an "open bolt indicator" priced at 12 for $3.99, but there's no picture with it.  Is this the same thing?

I believe so.

I'm glad this question was asked, as I've often wondered the same thing.  I had been just kinda laying it in the opening of the action, instead of putting the "rod" down the bore.

I never had a problem with them. Never shot more than 10rds rapid and put one in. I suppose if you can get a barrel so hot to cock off a round then it is possible to melt one but?

I use a cut down 30cal NRA flag in my ar because the CMP one that I have will not stay in the chamber, and that's the only problem I have ever had.

If this is the same flag that is sold by Fullton,  it also serves as a very good dry firing device in the M1A.  It holds the bolt  back just far enough that it only takes a slight pull to re-cock the hammer, just put the flag part down into to magezine and practice away.

If anyone wants one, I have a few that have never been used from CMP rifles just laying around.  IM me and we'll work something out.
