I became a US Citizen yesterday .  I discovered they really did run out of M1 Garands at the CMP.  M1s were to be a special celebration gift for me and my son - just a fringe benefit of citizenship, so I am a little bummed, but not so much that the smile has come off my face.   That said, the CMP said they expect to have more in the fall, so I will wait and see (impatiently!).

Question:  Should I order ammo now, even though I don't have the rifles?  Is there significant risk of the ammo increasing in price or shipping costs in the meantime? I have seen the pics of the Indiana Jones warehouse load of ammo, so I am probably ok on supply, but since the raw materials are indexed high and freight costs are increasing with fuel costs, ...

Congratulations!!!

I'd be tempted to order ammo now--then you'd be obligated to be on the ball when M1's come back.

That is pretty much what I did for the M1 Carbines. I bought 10 15 round magazines and 500 rounds of .30 Carbine. Now I have my order in for the carbine itself.

Go ahead and get some ammo, one of the cases of Greek on enblocs in bandoleers would be a good start. Then, in October or so, when they start selling Garands again you will be ready.
