Hey guys, new here, but not to the platform.  Can the 80 gr. SMK's be loaded to magazine length?  How much longer can they possibly be than the 77's?  Thanks for the input guys.  L2B

I concur.

How much longer, indeed.  I dunno.

Thanks guys for the input!  Thanks also Scott for the pic.  It seems like they have a longer thinner ogive to them.  Wonder if it would be worth loading them single?  Anybody done this?  Thanks again, L2B

The fastest twist rate barrel I own is a 1:8.  I don't think I can shoot the 80SMK.  Since the 77s shoot fine, I don't see a need to fool with the single load 80s.

Some shooters use modified magazines with the front web cut out to clear the bullet, with mixed results.  There is a commercial magazine currently on the market for this purpose, and the company's name escapes me right now.

You get to decide for yourself if you want to fool with that option.  Ask a highpower shooter whether loading single shot is worthwhile, too!

The 80 SMK is one of the most popular Service Rifle competition rounds. It is loaded to beyond magazine length and used during the 600 yard stage in single feed fashion.

Will [some | any] 1:8 twist barrels stabilize the 80SMK?  Do you know how long it is?

All 1/8 twist barrels will stabilize 80 grain bullets. Unless you have a carbine length barrel which dramatically lowers velocity. 1/8 twist 20" barrels perform very well using 80 grain bullets and minimal jump to the rifling. .010" jump is recommended. 22.0 to 23.0 grains of H4895 or 23.0 to 24.0 grains of RE-15, VihtaVuori N140 or Varget will work best. DO NOT JAM THE BULLET INTO THE RIFLING w/o lower these charge weights.

Look for the most accurate load using these powders and 20" velocities between 2550fps and 2650 fps.
