hey guys i got a CRKT m16-14m ( CRKT ) and im having a hard time keeping the blade sharp. im using the spyderco sharpening system ( Spyderco )and for some reason i cannot keep a good edge.

im following the instructions and go through all the steps for a 40 degree angle.
ill do the back of the knife first then i will switch to the front (tip) of the knife.

i can get it sharp but it will last a week or so and then i have to redo it. im using it to cut mostly clear tape and other normal use.

any idea on whats going on?

It's possible that you're leaving too toothy of an edge. Try honing on a leather strop loaded with polishing compound. This will hone the teeth off the blade and leave a proper polished edge. Or, stroke it a few times on the back of your belt and see if it helps. You may just be laying those teeth over and just need to stand them back up. Either way, your knife won't kast long if you have to take a stone to it every week.

ill have to look up how to do that.

you would think this knife as popular as it is would hold a good edge. mabye i should take it to a professional and get it sharpened. start from scratch again. i did buy the knife slightly used.

The reason it doesn't hold a good edge is because its cheap steel.

The spyderco sharpmaker isnt a very good system either.

ouch double hit! every review i read on the sharpening system said it was the cats meow. as far as the knife goes never heard anything bad about crkt. not a cheap knife either.

you might try a diffrent  sharpening method. The sharpening system i use on my very abused Benchmade Mini Griptilian is the Gatco Diamond Sharpening System Set With 4 Hones  it can be found here. it does a good job, when done it will shave the hair right off the palm of my hand

The spyderco system is the best I have used. I can get a knife to shave in no time with it. CRKT makes a great knife for the money. My CRKT has AU8 or something crazy like that and it is great steel.

If you can get it shaving sharp you are a better man than i am.

The spyderco sharpmaker is nothing more than croc sticks, which has been around for a few decades or so.

I have a spyderco sharpmaker and the thing i didn't like about it is that it only has 2 angles and 2 stones. If you knife edge doesnt match perfectly to the 2 preset angles you will be reprofiling forever. Not a bid deal with soft low end steel, but when you start using D2 and S30V it takes hundreds of strokes per side and you end up with a rounded off tip.

I only use an edgepro now, 7 different stones and an infinitely adjustable angle.

As far as CRKT i have some of those too but nothing comes close to a Benchmade.

I've heard from many users that CRKT heat treats AUS-8 too soft, and besides, it's a lower end steel from lets say 154CM, S30V, D-2, VG-10 etc.

Try the sharpie trick to see if you are hitting the actual edge correctly, other than that, I use my sharpmaker to get all of my knives (Kershaw's and ZT's) hair-whittling sharp.  I think you got a bad blade in your CRKT.

Good luck!

i contacted CRKT and this is what the gal said:

Thank you for your email. For sharpening we offer our own Slide Sharp for razor edge knives.
For serrated or combination edge we recommend Lansky (800-825-2675) or Spyderco (800-525-7770) kits.
The angle is between 17-20 degrees for most of our knives with the exception of the KISS line which will range from 32-34 degrees.  On the KISS model you sharpen just the front bevel side only.

Our knives are honed by hand so each knife edge is unique. The most important thing is to just follow the natural grind when sharpening. Simply pull the knife blade back towards you (don't push the blade) with medium pressure at the same approximate angle as the original grind. Take the back of the knife and strop the edge on a piece of leather or even hard cardboard will do. (This will keep the fine edge from curling back.) Then apply a good coating of Break-Free CLP (or any 3 in 1 oil) and keep it lubricated.

ok so if i read that right their angle from the factory is 20 degrees? from what ive read on the spyderco site that is very thin. they recommend a 40 degree angle for my knife.

any ideas on that?

I had lots of problems at first but finally learned the system. First watch the video. Then practice. I started with kitchen knifes to practice. It took me awhile to get the angle and pressure down on the system. I was doing more harm than good at first. I just kept trying. If you have the spyderco system use the grey stones first. Make sure you use the sharp point of the stone first then the flat side. Give it 20 to 30 strokes each. Then switch to the white stone and repeat. After this take a good piece of leather and perfect the edge. I usually give it 20 to 40 strokes. At this point the knife should be very sharp. If it won't shave you at this point you are doing something wrong.

thing that is confusing me now is CRKT says to sharpen the edge to about 20 degrees. spyerco says 40 degrees.

i thought anything less than 30 was way too drastic of an edge and wont last that long.

I use the 40 degree method. I am like you, I think 20 is a little harsh. But I am no expert.

Me too....

I just follow the directions and get sharp edges.
