Looking at getting the CZ 452 American, having trouble deciding on the 22lr or the 17hmr. Anybody shooting the 17 hmr ?  It looks like the price of the ammo for the 17 is pretty spendy when compared to the 22lr. Thoughts ?????

22lr  10 bucks per 500 rounds
17hmr  10 bucks per 100 rounds

well, that was easy.
the 452 is quite a rifle, I like mine
Buy both

452 American is the best 452, especially if you like the straight classic American stock.
Good 22lr. ammo can cost more than 17HMR.  Good being the idea here as 17HMR is a very accurate round. With 22lr., you can shoot, and sometimes get good results, with bargan priced ammo.  None will compete with the 17, but you will have options.
If there is no 22lr. bolt gun in your safe, and your budget will allow for a scope to go with, this biased shooter will advise to buy that 452 in 22.

I have a 452 varmit with a weaver v-24 scope on it. Shoots like a dream.  Dont forget to drop in  a lighter spring on the trigger. If you go to Rimfirecentral.com they have a CZ section and one of their sponsers Brookie sells the springs. I think it was under 10 dollers.
The cheepest place i could CZs localy was in washington at a place called EastCountyGuns.com

Hope this helps
btw mine is a 22

Thanks guys !  I'll go 22 this time around. I don't have a bolt action 22, only a 10/22 that leaves me, well unimpressed. Pretty excited about a decent 22lr in the stables. Will be doing the Brookie mods. Picking it up for $279.00 before FFL charges Wooo Hoooo!

Sound choice, good luck.
Please know that these come thru with a bunch of oil and bluing matter in the bore. Clean it carefully and from the breach. Do not pass patches until clean, You will wear it out.  Clean till it seems to normalize. Then shoot it.

I have a CZ varmiter in 17 on the way, the american is just the non H bar model, however the 17 ammo i paid for was 12 bucks for a brick of 50 rnds, kinda high, but the round itself is a laser, and if you need to clean up a dog town, aint no better round for the job

If you buy the HMR you can always get a second barrel for 22 LR. not the other way around though.

I reccommend a nylon brush. Several wet patches, a couple swipes with a nylon brush, several wet patches, You will see it lighten up, dry patchs. You will need a .17 cal. cleaning rod to avoid damaging it. Trust me on this, these are tight bored. A Dewey .17 cal. rod with a brass adapter and plastic pointed jag are what I use. This is a worthwile process. When done, one occational dry patch will get you straight until any lead ring develops. Another story.
Do not damage it, it will remain accurate for your lifetime if not damaged by cleaning technique.

Cold, actually the American and Varmint models differ quite radically. How does yours shoot?

I own a  CZ452 and it is one of the best rifles I have ever owned.  It is a tackdriver and was very reasonable price.  I cannot say enough about this rifle.

Well bro

I dont own mine yet, if you read my post it says "on the way" I have been researching and talking to people about it for the last month, im on rimfirecentral and Predator Masters and from what I have gathers both from there and gun stores, the prices of the guns is exactly the same,  Sportingarms.com has botht he american and the varmiter in 17 hmr for 339, I asked both the dealers their why the same price, they said the only difference is the heavy barrel, so you would be the first to note  the American and Varmint models differ quite radically changes in the guns, now if one has a slightly better trigger etc, that is not a radical difference by most concerned, but feel free to elaborate, I havent got mine yet to shoot, but im pretty sure I can shoot that baby 1 MOA or better if I do my part (and theres no gale force winds)

Cold, sure, I will be happy to fill you in.
American has two reciever screws to mount the stock. Very important to some. The reciever groove is 3/8", barrel length is a bit longer and of course it is lighter.
The varmint has one reciever screw and a barrel screw, shorter heavier barrel, important to some, a 11mm groove and a bit more weight and a stock better suited for bags.
Folks report accuracy is good with both versions.  I am a fan of the sporter style stock even though it sucks on the bags.

I think that in 17hmr the only difference is the barrel, I'm not sure on that, but I recall some report like that at rimfire central.

the 22lr and 22wmr on the other had are just as ALAN308 says, I have the 22lr version of the Varmit, and it does have the one recieverscrew/1 barrel screw set-up. Accuracy is fantastic.

you can see the barrel screw in this pic, it's the top rifle.
