I have a registered lower, but the paper states .223.  Am I allowed to put another caliber upper on this lower?  Or do I have to stick to .223 uppers?

Put on any caliber you want.

BATFE asks that if you decide to permanently change the configuration -- for an AR, that means selling the upper that matches the Form 1/4, and thus you can no longer assemble it to match the registered description -- you pick a new primary configuration and send them a letter notifying them of the new caliber, barrel length and OA length.

Thanks.  I just got a 7.62x39 upper for my AR-15 last week.  Didn't know if it was legal to put it on my full auto gun.  I remember Accurate Arms (Pre Bushmaster) asking for the tax stamp on this lower before they would sell me a 10" barrel for this gun.

Just thought of something.  There is no description of the upper.    On the paper work, there is a section for caliber.  It lists it as 223.  I better stick to that.  I don't want to get into any trouble.  Local police all know I have it.  I even shoot with some of them.  But I don't want to push my luck.
