I've been picking these up from time to time, and now that I'm headed to Afghanistan, I've been thinking of taking one with me to replace me newer model Ka-Bar that I toted while I was in Iraq.

I found a beater mark 2 on ebay yesterday that I will probably take with me instead of one of my nicer examples. I find them to be good all around utility knives, and they have a bit of sentimental value to me because my dad carried one of these during his tour in Vietnam in 1967. I think it's pretty cool to ressurect older gear like this and put it to good use again, and I doubt I'll see very many of these overseas.

I know that big knives like this aren't the current fashion in theater these days, but I like them and they do everything I need a knife to do, so it's all good. Good enough for the guys who carried them through the Pacific Campaign, Korea and Vietnam, so I figure this one's good enough for me. There is the thought that I might be destroying a piece of history or some such, but the way I see it, I'm giving a piece of history a new lease on life.

Anybody collect or use these old blades? There's a number of different variants, and they're fun to collect, but prices are going through the roof.

I have my grandfathers Ka-Bar Mk 2 he carried in the pacific in WWII.  It's a good knife but nothing to write home about.

I'm fond of Western 46-8 models myself. Nice examples of these are pricey too. It seams like the last couple years they have been comeing out of the woodwork. Maybe folks needing cash are digging in the attic or something. A WWII model would be a good one to deploy with if looking to add some hitory to a already been there Western. I would get a new sheath made up though. There is a fella on ebay who makes some real nice Johnson style sheathes for MK2's and more, he also does reproduction models
