I am about to buy my first FAL and I have a question for more seasoned owners.... Is the carry handle pretty much useless if you plan to mount any optics? If so, can you simply remove the carry handle or do you need some sort of ring to fill the space where the carry handle would otherwise attach? My follow-on question is about the different DSA Extreme Duty scope mounts. Would you recommend buying the extended mount or the standard? Thanks for your help. Can't wait to pick-up the new toy tomorrow! |

The extended mount is only for use without the carry handle. Are you getting the rail handguard also? It's supposed to provide a continuous rail when used together. If it's too late for you to order your receiver without the carry handle cut, DSA sells the little washer for $2 I don't think It would get in the way of optics, because it stays down out of the way. But you probably couldn't use it to carry the rifle with some longer optics. |

I don't have immediate plans to get forend rails but it is always a possibility down the road....If there is no drawback to the extended scope mount then having the continuous rail as an option later on might be nice. I am definitely going to put some optics up top so it boils down to whether the carry handle would even be functional with optics on top. So if the carry handle can be left on with the standard Extreme Duty mount but wouldn't clear an Eotech (or clear but let you get your figers around the handle) then the carry handle is pretty much worthless and it might just make sense to remove it altogether and get the extended mount. Please let me know if my assumptions are wrong....if you can actually grab the carry handle and carry the rifle with an Eotech or similar optic then I would probably keep the carry handle. Does anybody have a picture of the extended mount on their FAL? I'd be curious to see what it looks like with or without the forend rails. Thanks! |
Where did you get it and how much was it? I found the Grenadier Precision website but their store is down and the website looks like it hasn't been updated in about a year. |
| DSA sells a parkerized washer to take the place of the carry handle for two bucks. They are easy to install, especially if you spend a few more $$ for the tool. Just unscrew the gas tube collar and remove the handle, slip in the washer with the concave side towards the collar and tighten the collar back up. |
Go to the Leitner Wise forum (Industry section) and look at my post entitled "Darren". He lists the contact number for Susan to place your order with. They are about $130-ish although I placed a WTB ad on the FALfiles and got a new one for $100. R |

No, it's not useless it's a useful accessory that you can use or not. The FAL is a heavy rifle. If you're not carrying with a sling 100% then the carry handle is there. However, it all depends on what optic you're using & how it's mounted. If you're using a long scope then unless you're using high quality QR rings a semi-permanent mount will preclude use of the carry handle. If you're using an ACOG then you have enough room in the back to use it & the carry handle. I have 5 ACOGs on FALs & they work fine that way. If you're using a red dot, Aimpoint or Eotech, you do have enough room to mount it back & still have room for the carry handle to be used. There's really no problem mounting them back. If you want to mount them forward then if you use QR mounts you can pop them off & on, so you could retain the carry handle. While the FAL is not luggage most were designed with the carry handle to be used when the need arose. If it wasn't useful it wouldn't be part of the design. |
![]() It's a Replica T48 Alloy Trigger Guard . |

Carry handles- IIRC Dave Selvaggio has been quoted as saying the carry handle cut has a slight negative impact on accuracy (harmonics). With the extreme duty topcover/IOR scope on my Fal, the carry handle remains in the down position. The above two items notwithstanding, I opted for the carry handle- only bling I went with. A certain amount of (authentic) cool is necessary. |
Cool, thanks for the link, I've never seen those there. I like the look of it. |
