So when choosing case gauges what are the best?

Right now I'm looking for one that will also check loaded cartrages. I know how most of them work for the most part. However, I've never used them and have never
ask if you can even check a loaded case. If not looks like i"m in for some pulling.

Also I want one that checks for length and headspace. I've seen the usuals, Lyman, Dillon, LE Wilson. Which is the best at what I'm wanting. Where can I find them?

Case gage thread, pg 2

I have drop-ins and the Hornady/Stoney Point set.  If I could only have one, it would be the latter, as it's more valuable to me.

I also have the Hornady/Stoney Point comparator set and I think any one who reloads bottleneck rifle cartridges should have one or a similar comparator set. A drop in guage is a decent "one size fits most" way to go for a single cartridge and they are good for checking rounds quickly that you are loading in bulk. The comparator on the other hand will help you set up your dies, tell you how much you are setting the shoulder back, and with different inserts can help you measure ogive length which is a more useful measurement then overall length to tip. They can also be used for sorting bullets by ogive length. Drop in gauges are based on generic saami headspace dimensions, while a comparator lets you set up for your specific chamber/rifle. I do plan to pick up gauges for my bulk .223 and pistol cartridges for final check, and I use one religiously for my .458 Socom.

I have the Hornady set and a Wilson drop in. The Hornady is more "useful" for actually checking headspace, but the Wilson is nice to have on the bench for quick checks. I say get both, that seems to be the trend so far.

Midsouth has the Hornady in stock here.
