I may even should be a little embarrassed to ask, but I know ya'll would know. I have mostly shot plated or fmj

I loaded up some cast lead 175 gr SWC with 3.8 gr WSF in .38 spcl.  This was my first venture using WSF in .38, but I wanted to try something other than HP-38.

Shot some for sampling and I noticed they were very smoky shooting. Then when I threw the empty brass in my bucket, I noticed a lot of flaky residue come out of the cases .

Is it normal?
Is this residue from the lube?
Does the WSF cause this to be worse?
Would HP-38 be any different/cleaner?
Should I just stick with HP-38?

Smoke is from the lube.  Not much you can do for this.  Single-based powders, IME, make the lube smoke slighly less, but not a lot.

Smoke is from the bullet lube as mentioned.

As far as a clean load with cast bullets, not going to happen.

Cast bullet loads are dirty, but can be very accurate as well as cheap.

As above the smoke is from the lube. The flakes sound like unburnt powder, not sure though as I have never used the powder in question.

Try powdercoating the lead if you want to reduce the smoke.

The flakes don't appear to be unburnt powder. They are bigger. They ranged in size up to almost the size of a small primer priming punch.

Could I be putting too much crimp on the bullet as well?  Would that have any effect?

Also, could the really old lube on these bullets make them extra smoky? or maybe the type lube used? (Not that I can change that now)

It is not that I mind the smokiness since I shoot outdoors, but these bullets just seemed more smoky than any other cast bullets I have shot.

Yes, the lube would have a lot to do with the smoke. Some smoke less than others but I don't know which to suggest. The manufacturers website may give more info.
Don't know that older lube would smoke more than fresh. You'll have to try that out.

The flakes are burnt and unburnt powder. You might think powder burns down to nothing but all powders leave behind some residue. What you're seeing is hard carbon chunks from the burnt powder. Again, some leave more behind than others. I use a lot of HP-38 and see that all the time.

Where did you get your data?

I can find No data for 175gr bullets with WSF in the 38 Special.

Smoke is normal.

The residue, judging from your description, is likely from carbon build up inside the cartridge case that flakes out from time to time. Normal and no big deal. I don't think changing powder would help or hurt.

I disagree with dryflash's opinion that cast bullet loads are inherently dirty.  Shoot properly coated/lubed boolits, and any 'dirt' is going to be from the propellant.  I've shot many a 'dirty' jacketed load.
