Good Morning All!

Last night I was happily going along loading some 300 Win Mag. Brought the Lever down on one and it doesn't feel quite right.

Caught the rim a bit and kind of folded it over.

My question is: Shoot or pull the bullet? I am leaning towards shooting it...

Sorry for the image quality, I forgot my real camera back home this weekend while pheasant hunting...

Pull the bullet, reuse the powder and primer, recycle the case.

I don't think it will chamber anyway. Hard to tell with pic.

I would pull it & save the powder & bullet, and throw away the shell....if you try to load that round , it will probably get stuck in the chamber...

I wouldn't shot it.  Why take the chance of something going badly wrong.  Bullets, brass, and powder are cheap, eyes and fingers are not user replaceable parts!  Pull that thing apart, save the powder, throw out the brass, and check the bullet over carefully.  If it not deformed, reuse.  Be safe and good luck.

Depending on how badly the case has collapsed, you might not even be able to salvage the bullet.  Pitch the whole thing, it's not worth worrying over.

Don't take the risk.  The relief for the neck in the rifle chamber could act to lock the bullet in the case, and when the assembly is fired, cause a large pressure spike, maybe a Kaboom.

The relief for the case neck is fairly close fit.  Any kind of wrinkle in the neck that gets caught between the body of the bullet and the chamber can cause a major problem.

You might want to go back and chamfer all the cases to prevent any repeats.

Thanks for the guidance folks. You have convinced me to pull it.

I will have to double check but I think this was one of the last 3-4 (once fired) cases I had. Then I went to new brass.

I chamfered all the cases (even the new ones). The once fired ones were full length sized as well. However I had never used the RCBS "case lube pad" (just used a spray in the pact) and got a bit extra lube on the cases and caused some minor denting just below the neck. This might have contributed to the malfunction.

Thanks Again!

How do you plan to shoot that cartridge?

If it chambers, I would be looking into getting a different rifle.

Sometimes, this just happens.  I crushed the neck on a .22 Jet case a couple of weeks back, and while they aren't particularly tough to get, they're expensive.  I salvaged it by cutting the neck off to find out whether it would chamber in my Contender.
