I have been eyeing an FAL at a local gunshop. It is obviously a build and has a number of parts from different makers.  The price is really right, but it has a Century Int'l receiver.  Everything is tight, feels good and looks good, but something about Century screams RUN...

Anyone have any real experience GOOD or BAD with Century Receivers?

The owner is a good friend and has offered a shooting inspection before purchase...

I had a CIA L1A1 that ran like a clock, with metric mags no less.
I would just go over it well before I bought it. If the price is right, you can send it to a FAL gunsmith and get it checked out.

A few years ago, Century receivers were difficult to build on, but not impossible. However, once they were tweaked and running reliably, they were/are as good as any other FAL receiver.

I have two F A Ls that I built on Century receivers. I would confidently rely on either one in a firefight.

The newer Century receiver are much better than those made just a couple of years ago. If that rifle runs reliably, then it is just a matter of price.

Don't see how you could go wrong---you say the price is "really" right---AND he's offering a "shooting" inspection before buying.
I'm sure there are PLENTY of problem Century's out there----but I bet there is a MUCH greater number that work fine from the start.
Remember, when a person gets one that doesn't work---the first thing they do is try and warn everyone---and rightly so! When you spend hard earned money on something, it should work as designed. Then you read about the non-working ones on boards like this.
But generally, when it DOES work, as it is "EXPECTED" to do---- nothing is really said unless asked. Therefore, you here ALOT of chatter about non-working examples, but not near as much about the good ones. This type of  thing has greatly affected Century and Springfields rep (with the M1A)

It was a Century on Imbel that started my love of the FAL---I then went out and picked up a Century on Century that ran just as good. I since sold that one off towards another FAL.
I know several people that are very pleased with their Century on Century. just my 2 cents.

ETA: you didn't say what the 'really right' price is---but if it is like $400-450, then I say its worth it even if it is a problem child ----as a project gun or just for the sum of its parts. YMMV

Thanks for the input...I am learning to NOT be so impulsive, so asking here and on a few other boards has helped me SLOW DOWN before making a decision.

The price is $550.00, BTW, which I thought was really good including 5 mags, case, sling and a Battle Pack of SA surplus.

I really do appreciate the input

Looks like I'm off to buy an FAL.

Incidentally, I saw a FAL at the last gunshow that was ALL FN parts...very nice, but the barrel had been shortened to 14" with a 2.5 " (or possibly 4") muzzle brake.  Pricey at $1250, but it included 3 mags.

The last Century build I did under-timed a bit(no biggie), and the LS hole was a bit tight - other than that, it went together just fine, and has run like a champ...
