| I have a single shot 10ga that I am debating shortening the barrel on. It has a 28" barrel with a fixed full choke. I like it how it is for hunting purposes (mainly coyote and geese) but I think it would be handier and maybe a little funner with the shorter barrel. Also I can usually only find steel shot but that isn't recommended to shoot through the full choke (though I've read it doesn't hurt it but may eventually bulge the end). So the question is should it be done? If so how short would you go and still be effective? I'm thinking 20-22" (don't like the looks of 18"). |

I have the exact same dilemma with an H&R 10ga. I looked into having it threaded for screw in chokes and that was more than I paid for the gun so I've left it alone for now. I didn't think about that. That would be kind of cool, but like you said probably cost more than the gun itself haha. What does something like that run? |

Best deal i found was $35 to shorten and $165 to install chokes from Carlson's, includes 3 tubes. Its not unreasonable but I gave $100 for the gun and im not sure it will up the value of the gun by $200+shipping. http://www.choketube.com/choke-tube-installation.php |
| About 20 years ago I did shorten a H&R 10 ga. to 18 inches. The recoil was no worse than with the long barrel, recoil is no big deal to me. However the muzzle blast felt like it set my eyes back in the sockets. Not fun to shoot. Like I said recoil is no big deal but when muzzle blast hurts your eyes and face I stop. Just FYI. |

If you chop it you will end up with a cylinder bore choke. Not ideal for geese. Not ideal for longer range Coyote.
IMO..unless your intended shooting distance changes to a shorter range then leave it as is or bite the bullet and get tubes put in. If I used it on a regular basis and really liked it I would do chokes. Of course.. You could cut it and use it and make the decision after seeing if Cylinder Bore Choke is acceptable ? |

I say leave it. Get a Mossberg 835 turkey thug.
3 1/2 12ga and 10GA both have 18 pellets of OO . You gain nothing in payload and a slightly heavier slug and more recoil with the 10. With the 835 you get the versatility of ALL 12g rounds, follow up shots. Less recoil and ammo availability. |
