I have a TRW M-14 parts kit that will built up an an ARMSCORP reciever. This will be my 7.62 battle rifle and will have an Aimpoint and Magnifier. Stock will be plastic G.I. with cheek riser.

Thinking about having my gunsmith cut the barrel down to 18.5". Is there any reason I should not have the barrel cut down?

If you have a chrome lined GI barrel, cutting often causes the chrome lining to flake.  You might want to just buy a shorter barrel.

considering what usgi barrels are going for it should be no problem to sell your current barrel and buy a shorter one for little or no cost difference.

+1

There is also the issue of making the required threaded cuts and such to the barrel if you cut it down. Not really worth the time and cost unless you really really have to do it this way :)

If the TRW barrel is good to hook it will fetch 3-4 C notes. A new 18.5 comericial chrome lined tube will cost you 250ish. IME the new Criterion barrels outshoot ALL the GI barrels anyways

I had no idea the TRW barrels had that much value. Replacing with a new 18 incher seems like the best way to go. Thanks!

If you were to cut the barrel down would there be any issues with cycling or no?

Anything for the M14 made by TRW always brings the best price.  These are the parts of choice.

For brand-name value? Are the current-made barrels of comparable quality?

Yes, modern barrels are just as good or better than 1960s USGI barrels.
