I've done an archives search for chrony and chrono but didn't find the info I was looking for.  I'm in need of one to start working up loads for a surplus powder I have.  What are my better, reliable options?  I'd prefer not to buy cheap and buy twice but I'm not looking to spend a stupid amount of money.

Shooting Chrony Gamma or beta master. Mine is the blue one(think it is the beta master) and works fine. I like it because the computer part can be placed on your bench like a remote. MidwayUSA sells them and I think Cabelas carries them now if there is one near by you.

I'm parshal to my Oehler 35P.  They're kinda pricy but accurate.

You really want the master, it's only half as expensive to replace the case without the LCD attached. Just in case you pull a me....

I agree. My old chrono did not have the readout that was detachable and it was hard to see the numbers 10-15 away if it was in the direct sunlight.

Sir, it's been said that opinions are like a certain bodily orifice, everyone has one!  I spent some time studying the Oehler 35P and while I may agree it is quite accurate and the Cadillac of the lot I also agree with your conclusion that it is quite expensive.  I settled on the PACT PC2 some years ago and when the electronics finally died PACT offered me an attractive deal on their Professional XP which I've been using for about three years now.  I recommend the PACT professional XP, for the price I believe it's a better value than the Oehler.

Having said that one thing every potential buyer of a chronograph should consider when making their choice is how difficult and expensive it will be to replace or repair damaged sky screen parts when you shoot them.  The question is not if you will shoot your sky screens but when.  The PACT sky screen parts are cheap and easily replaced.  I carry spares in my chrono bag "just in case".  I also have extra 9v batteries.  I dislike carting all my equipment to the range and end up unable to finish what I'm doing due to lack of "stupid" things like batteries.  JMHO, 7zero1

Thanks guys.  I'm leaning towards the PACT Prof XP or the Beta Master.  I still need to research them more.  The Oehler is entirely out of my price range.....$200ish is the high end of my bracket.

I'm still all ears for suggestions and advice.  I see that whole "not if / but when" angle and I'm not naive enough to think I will be the exception.  I'd prefer not to replace the entire rig if it takes a round or two.  The detachable screen seems ideal, especially for working on a line with other shooters.

I had a pact since the mid 1990's and finally retired it when I got a Shooting Chrony Beta Master.

The Beta Master is more compact while the PACT has an interface that is easier to use and does not require you to have the directions handy to reference.   Both are quite accurate and easy to use.

What else will I need with these things?  Tripods?  I know nothing about chronographs and I've never really paid attention to the guys at the range.

Yes, you will want a decent tripod. It doesn't have to be a Bogen or Gitzo. It helps to have a bubble level on it, but isn't required.
When you line it up, remember all those posts about guys shooting their chronos and then take a critical look at your alignment again... :)

And do remember to take line of sight over bore axis into account

Before you buy a chronograph for working up loads for surplus gunpowder, or any gunpowder, think about how you will use it for that task and what you'll learn.

A chronograph will never measure chamber pressure if that's what you're after.  All it can do is measure and record bullet speed, period, dot.  The computer inside can compute some statistical information about the differences in the speeds.

Chasing speed to match another cartridge may or may not work out for you.  Don't pass by an accurate load chasing after another 100 fps; a fast miss is still a miss.

Chronographs can be useful during load work up, but they provide a secondary measure of chamber pressure and should be treated that way.
