Need to clean to a very dirty rifled 37MM Penn Arms launcher and have never done it before.  Follow the "standard" bore cleaning method or is there some potion I should use or does and don't I should know about?

I have:
37MM bore brush
Very large patch puller, but no very large patches
Odorless Mineral Spirits
Break free bore cleaner
Breakfree CLP and Militec

Thanks,
Mark

Mark, if the launcher has been used with smokeless casings, you have the proper supplies to get the job done. If the casings used to foul it were black powder (which is more common in 37mm) all you need is a baby bottle brush, and some hot, soapy water. Just simply scrub the fouling out. (Sniff the barrel. Smell rotten eggs? Black powder fouling.)

If it is your launcher, and you plan on using smokeless and/or smokeless were used to foul it, there are several cleaning kits available on Auction Arms, or Gunbroker for 20-40 bucks. The 40mm will work, they are just a bit tight. You can pick up 37/40mm bore brushes, patches, and mop brushes. I keep my mop brushes in plastic containers, one soaked with Militec, for the after cleaning barrel lube, one for Hoppes #9 to scrub the nasty out.

If you can remove the barrel from the launcher, it will keep any fouling from getting into the firing mechanism. The breechface can simply be scrubbed clean with an old tooth brush and patch of Hoppes, dried, and lightly oiled.

You can clean the barrel from either end, once you remove it. It's not like you will damage the accuracy of it by cleaning from the wrong end. (Close counts in grenades and horseshoes, and 37mm)

Use the hoppes soaked mop to wet the entire interior of the barrel, let it absorb for a few minutes, then use the copper brush to remove the fouling. Follow up with another wire brush wrapped with clean shotgun patches. Replace the patches and repete the mopping and scrubbing until the patches come out clean. Then finish with the Militec soaked mop, to kive it a nice lube. This is very important when you shoot a lot of black powder casings, as the aluminum barrels will corrode and the steel will rust easily.

Hope this helped, GROG

Actually, Grog's board is more active than it's ever been. Lots of new members, lots of active topics, lots of active classifieds. I suppose the influx of new M203's and 37mm launchers into the market could be attributed to this. Check it out, a lot of cool stuff going on over there.

Thanks Jimmy. Yes, I get two to four new members a day over there, a lot from here too. Yes, there has been a pick-up since the election too. Seems people are stocking up on gun related stuff for some reason... GROG
