I just got the HSGI belt last week, so I can only give limited advice. I will say that I think the Cobra inner belt buckles are (for most applications) as much fashion as function. If you're on a budget, HSGI sells a basic web belt that would be fine. I set mine up with a plain 1.5" leather belt while I was waiting on my fancy cobra belt to arrive. It seemed to work just fine and offers much easier adjustment than the nylon belt a/ Cobra buckle.

Depends on the intended use.  You're using something built with war-fighting in mind for casual range use; the overbuilt nature of the product does not come into play in your situation.

I would not have felt comfortable clipping into a bird wearing a plain leather belt.  There is a reason that riggers belts (which the cobra is just a variation of) are built like they are.  Also helps to carry your pistol, mags, grenade pouch, or whatever else you have on your belt in a more rigid fashion.

The cobra buckle is nice for quickly removing the belt and gear as well

I guess having our rigger make a multicam Cobra-buckled dog collar was overkill.

Cobra buckles for belts fucking win.. I wouldn't necessarily use them as inner belt.. We mostly wore 1.5" riggers belts so you can attach your (whatever the company calls it) helo retention quick snap thingamajig.. when wear belts over that. So.. if you aren't going to be flying around in helicopters.. then you probably just wear a regular belt to keep your pants up, then put your cobra belt over that to keep all of your shit with you.

Just my opinion..

MilspecMonkey http://milspecmonkey.com/store/hardware-diy/372-itw-gt-cobra-buckle.html, has ITW/Nexus non-load-bearing Cobra buckles.

Being plastic, these buckles are lighter, and while they might scratch or mar the finish of your rifle, they won't gouge the metal of your rifle. If Uncle Sam is paying for your rifle, then marring the finish  or gouging the metal of same is probably your last concern, as it should be.

As noted, non-load-bearing, but if you're not planning on buckling yourself into a helo, might be something worth considering.  YMMV.

Be advised that these belt buckles are sized for the belt that they will accept.  The buckles are bigger, up to 1/2" wider than the belt.  So don't plan on easily threading your Cobra buckle through your jeans.
