I've got a ProCarry II Stainless that I want to turn black.  The aluminum frame has the gray'ish finish from Kimber and the slide is standard finished stainless.  I added a Wilson Combat stainless arched mainspring housing in lieu of the factory plastic one.  She is my daily carry piece.  Now my question:  Is there a low-cost, hardware store alternative to Duracoat/Gukote?  I know this sounds like a case for DFACS, but there must be SOMETHING out there comparable/adequate.  Thanks, all.

Gunkote/Durakote is not all that expensive...perhaps you better quantify "low cost".  If you want low cost from a hardware store, you have Krylon or Rustolium.  If you are trying to avoid an airbrush setup, Brownells sells "rattle cans" of Gunkote.  I sometimes use it for small parts in a pinch when I don't want to get out the spraying gear.  I suppose if you took your time you could get a decent "carry finish" with it.

Whatever you choose, you shouldn't skimp on the prep...the final product is all about how you prep it.
