I was always concentrated on RDIAS or RLL so I've no idea about RR and its price.
Apparently, I was offered to buy Colt M16A1 at $20K.
Don't have much detail yet but I will find out more at tomorrow.
I'm not sure I should jump on it or save up for another HK sear... any thoughts?

20K is a good deal and below market value for a Colt M16A1 if it's in decent shape. Most are going for 23-26K from what I have seen recently.

Unless it is damaged or severely worn, 20k is a good deal for a Colt M16A1.

I'm heading up there now to inspect the gun.
What to look for and any advice or tips on inspecting Colt M16A1?

buy the Black Rifles book and research...i dont think anyone can tell you everything to look for in 5 minutes

for me in your situation id ask lots of questions and go by gut feel as much as what you see...since you dont know details on whats right/wrong w/ the gun

original finish is a biggie, but for $20k even that wouldnt be any issue at all...your -$5k under value if it looks nice...so really anything wrong with it could be fixed short of a reweld and some would argue $20k for a repaired gun still is a good deal

good luck

Yeah, the final price is $21.5K
Looks good inside with almost no wear.
Outside has some nicks and scratches from the storage at Police Dept.
It comes with an pencil barrel upper w/ triangular handguard, old delta ring and tear drop forward assist upper... again storage marks but looks to be unfired.
Decision... decision....

Honestly, it does not look bad, it is a way lot better looking than the A1's I own and at the going prices these days, you are getting a deal.  If I were in the market, I would strongly consider it.

I think it looks fine,

the uneven roll mark on the left side looks correct.

Is it a 9 million serial number?

Are there any electro penciled police markings??

youre buying it at or below the cost of what a dealer would pay to buy one. I think most offer in the 80-85% of market value range.

Sweet deal IMO. Market seems to be increasing about 10% per year.

937XXXX serial range.
No electrical pencil mark.
Some scuff where I could see the bare aluminum.
Still on the fence... I've RLL and DIAS but obviously don't have any RR.

I'd jump on this if I had the funds. That's a good price. I've had RDIAS and RRs and can honestly say that I prefer RRs MUCH more than DIAS for a number of reasons.

With that said, depending on what kind of collector you are, if you can get another HK sear soon, I'd wait and do that. Sears are increasing in value at a ridiculous rate.

you could buy it and when you get your hands on it in a year sell it for $6-8k profit

i dont see a reason not to buy...seems to be $3-4k under market

ok, I would hit it...

Is the 21.5 the OTD price? do you have to pay sales tax?

Yes, OTD price.
I was hoping to add some more cash and get the HK sear within next two months but oh well... gotta make a final decision by morning.

You don't seem overly thrilled by the prospect of buying this Colt. Even though it is a really good deal, if it doesn't "do it" for you, then maybe you should just keep saving and get the HK sear that you really want.

Ask yourself how you'd feel once you spend your "fun money" and you have this Colt coming to you, THEN an HK sear comes up for sale. Would you be happy with your decision or not?
1/6/2017 4:52:03 AM EDT
[#21]
You have to make a decision by the morning? Lol

It's nothing to get too excited about.

Besides, when it comes to making a big buy, it's usually a mistake to fall for a pressure buy. Unless there's an actual paid option contract, if there's a deadline on a buy, I always let the deadline pass; sometimes just to see what happens. You'd be surprised how often it's for sale even after the deadline (in which case you can then get it for even less bc you called their BS).

I know of at least one other M16A1 that is currently $21,000. If you look at Sturm, Subguns, or GB, I don't see M16A1s recently selling in the 23-25+ range.

About three months ago, I was offered an M16A2 for $28k, NIB allegedly.

M16s have nosedived in price. Two years ago, Ruben was selling NIB M16A2 for $39,000 each. Now they're around 30-32. Guy I know last year got a brand spanking new M16A2 for 28.

Most of it has to do with the flood of M16s, some with questionable provenance, like the roll marked transferable M4, that came out last year. Word is that there are still lots more from the 'source', so I am told. If don't know if that's true, it's just what I was told. But if it's true, don't expect prices to rise. You'll have more opportunities.

But if you really want an HK sear, I'd hurry. Those are on a tear. The usual trendsetter, Ruben, is now selling HK sear guns for 40k+. No joke.

That's strange because I checked GB yesterday and there was only 3 transferable m16s for sale, normally there is a dozen or more.

the big M16 NIB thing that went on last year- driving prices down appears to be done....they are going back up in value....ive see bids well over $21k for M16a1's....
the golden time to buy a NIB A1 or A2 may be gone.....or maybe this collection is just on hold to wait until prices goes back up

i regret not getting a HK sear when i first started....it has a ton of advantages...you can have 5-8 different guns to shoot for what i have invested in just (2) of my high end FA's.......problem is you can only shoot one of them at a time....future investment potential?...is it better to have 1 hk sear for $35k...or have a $21k M16 & a $15k Uzi ? or a couple of Mac's??

maybe you live for HK's and its all you want and screw what it costs or return on investment some day.....or maybe the HK will continue to go up by crazy amounts and will always be way ahead investment wise

i enjoy my M16a2....and i paid $35k for a NIB Govt marked one........i wish i were able to do it again and found a $21k M16a1 like you did....id have $14k in my pocket towards M14 or G3 or a stemple 9mm/45 kit.....endless fun

good luck, whatever you decide.....if you pass on it you should hand out the info to someone here...let a forum member get the gun!!!

If you really want a Colt M16A1 I would get it as it is a solid deal.

However, if you really want an HK Sear and think you will just flip this toward an HK Sear in the future the deal in my estimation isn't good enough to take just because of the current pricetag.

You will tie your money up for at least a year, maybe more and there is risk of the transfer going sideways or like any collectible commodity there is a loss or damage risk when its not in your possession.  (especially if this is a F4 out of state with multiple transfers and cross country shipping)

I personally wouldn't tie up $21,500 for a year or more to potentially get a couple grand more in such a risky physical asset swap type proposal, but that's just me.

HK Sears also seem to be outpacing M16s right now so the gap may only widen over the year or two delay.  Also any money you did make on the M16 sale in the future will be reduced by the "collectibles" capital gains tax on the sale.   (making the assumption your marginal bracket is at least as high as the collectible cap rate tax)

Got bored and did some digging and this is all of the models I could come up with that can use a HK sear.

MP5 K/RS/SD
HK 51/91
HK 33/43/53/93
HK 21/22/23
HK 11/13
HK 32

Any HK guys know if I missed any?

but remember $35k gets you the sear, but only 1 gun at a time.....it looks nice to have and shoot all those other guns, but its its own category in a way

for myself i would have bought the HK sear a year ago if i understood it and skipped a few of my other FA's....had the same $$ into the hobby, but with better/more guns to shoot it with....

but you wont have a M16 then....which most collectors want (me included)
