So Colt has decided to go in a different direction than the folks who were looking at doing a common upper receiver for 7.62 and 5.56 and instead is doing a common lower for 7.62 and 5.56.

The lower includes the stock with a common buffer for any 7.62 or 5.56 mil spec upper.

I'm pretty excited about the SP901, but is there any negative to it? How much of a weight gain is the lower over a traditional mil-spec lower? Do you guys think the price is going to be insanely high?  I'm really hoping that it will not be another heavy beast that costs a small fortune as some of the other wonder rifles have been.

The "common receiver" thing is really just a technological/design accommodation to what is really a bureaucratic problem of mil/gov procurement and property control. It might have some value for NFA purposes, that's about all I can think of really for the average consumer.

I just look at it as another AR-308 variant to compare/contrast/compete with the other incarnations, with an interesting added feature.

Well, I like the camo worked into the annodization and think it "could be" less expensive to purchase the common lower and then a 5.56 and 7.62 uppers than two seperate rifles.  Plus I like the location of the bolt release and ambi controls.

Was looking at the Colt piston system the other day as well and see that the bolt carrier is a bit different I assume in an attempt to eliminate carrier tilt.

I do think it's a really interesting option in the AR-308 market, especially if they go with the longer handguard version they showed in that early promo piece.  Full length rail handguard is really the ONLY way to go nowadays, IMO.  That's the biggest fail of the SCAR, and one reason (SWAG) that Knights appears to be building EMC's like crazy for mil/SOCOM contracts.

My opinion is that the only right way to put a piston onto an AR lower is to completely redesign the upper to put the recoil springs where they should be for a piston system... at that point, you're better off to redesign the lower as well.  This is the same design evolution that Magpul went through which resulted in the Masada; to correctly adapt the AR for piston operation, you end up changing everything.

Agreed. On the TOS though there's a thread started by what I believe is the lead designer of the Massoud that is trying to push forward with an open source piston upper for AR-15 lowers though, and it is interesting. He even has CAD renders up.

Anyone have any clue what the MSRP and/or release date for the SP901 is?

Colt has it up on their website already.

This is the pic they have on the product page...

So maybe they went back to the long handguard and gas system.

Who knows.  They are not out yet, but I would not be surprised to see several dealers and FFLs give you some "story" of how they are getting the first batch and in x amount of time.   Hold onto your money until you can see one with your own eyes.

Colt rarely fucks up new products.  But they have cataloged vaporware.  I say let them take their time. In any event, when they do come out, expect insane price premiums.  It will be SCARmania all over again.  So tack on another 6 to 9 months for the prices to normalize somewhat after release.

I waited over 2 years from when Colt announced the Delta Elite release at SHOT to when it was actually released.  The above poster's comment about them announcing vaporware and never releasing it is true as well.  Have the "double action only" 1911s ever come out?  Those were announced a year or more ago.  I don't think anyone is going to miss them though.

The fact that the last two Para catalogs have had virtually no LDA models shows how right you are about no one wanting a DAO 1911.

The SP901 really needs to come out though and it would be greatly disappointing if Colt neglected to offer for sale such a winning rifle.

Obviously I'm not the one who would purchase it provided it was sold at a competitive price to similar rifles of the same caliber.
