Is there a specific reason you want to limit the flexibility you have on that side of the vest? Something also to consider is that a rifle mag pouch will also hold the pistol, as well as rifle mags, gloves, or anything else of a bunch of items should you decide your needs have changed. The fastex buckles used for many of the crossdraw holsters are awkward to release, especially with gloves-not something you want to deal with if you're trying to draw the pistol. Use of rifle mag pouches also gives you a bit more flexibility of where you place the pistol, and you can swap it to your weapon side versus your reaction side if you desire.
Next thing is to avoid UTG/Condor/Voodo. Tactical Tailor is an excellent company and excellent product. Something breaks, which is highly unlikely, TT is a USA product that will repair it. UTG or Condor are Chinese made largely. I've bought some to compare, and yeah, they definitely wear out or break hardware faster. You get what you pay for, and when it breaks and you have to buy another one, you've just spent what you would have in the first place. |

I use the SKD/eagle universal chest rig and have been absolutely pleased. SKD Chest Rig
Check it out. But yeah, I agree the UTG and Condor stuff is pretty much crap. Bob |

Next thing is to avoid UTG/Condor/Voodo. I would like to second both of these observations. I have a cheesy Cheaper Than Dirt crossdraw mesh vest which I keep for bump in the night situations (with handgun, flashlight and chemlights). For a number of years, I've kept a Browning High power in the holster, which worked fine. Two weeks ago, I dropped an unloaded Glock 17 into the holster and buckled the fastex. Five minutes later, I finally got the fastex buckle undone, as the Glock grip angle locked the buckle shut. The holster worked for the Browning but not the Glock. UTG/Condor/Voodoo are flat cheap and low quality. I have a decent UTG gun case. It is lower quality and a poorer design than the Maxpedition case I've also used, but cost a third less. Chinese-made equipment is appropriate for non-critical uses, but for risk-your-life gear, strongly consider higher quality. I've stayed with the Cheaper Than Dirt vest because I think it is sufficient for use inside the house. When I go outside, I use higher quality U.S.-made gear. |
I'll join the dogpile...the crossdraw vest might look good on Stargate but in reality it is a major fail. Your pistol is going to bounce all over the place not to mention hang on everything you walk past. Even worse is if you use a "tactical" sling of any kind. Your pistol will actually grow a hand and grab your rifle every chance it gets.
My final suggestion is to NOT go cheap. Your gear will break at the absolut worse time. Fortunately, I was only out hunting when mine did. I had a knock off ALICE setup (belt, y-harness, pouches, etc.). Starting the day, I jumped a fence and the suspenders broke. I got to walk around the rest of the day with my web belt trying to pull my pants down. If price is a huge issue, I'd suggest cruising the EE. You can find some really good deals on quality gear that has barely been used. Most guys buy up a bunch of gear not knowing exactly what they like and what will work for them. The rest of it ends up on the EE. |
