I have just gotten one of the Condor brand molle armor carriers from Cheaper Than Dirt and it has a "cumberbun". I am not familiar with thing as my Protech vest does not have one. Exactly what is this thing for? I tried to put it around my waist when I put it on but it is very uncomfortable and seems unessecary. Do I need this thing for some reason or am I not utilizing it properly? Please fill me in before I cut it off.
I think it's designed to help keep the carrier in place although I see it coming in a lot handier with a regular vest and not really a plate carrier. I also think it's designed to help give you some breathing room so the carrier can expand a little with elastic instead of tightening it down down completely with the straps.
Cumberbunds on armor vests are usually internal and are meant to be snug around the midsection. They are designed to help displace the weight of rifle plates, soft armor, pouches and associated gear over hips so the brunt of the weight is not placed on your shoulders. When you are wearing the rig in a combat situation for hours, it can cause a lot of strain on your neck, shoulders, back, etc. While it seems unncecessary at first, trust me: it works and you will be glad you have it!
