Ron Allen (Ops Inc) made me a couple new collars for the 16th Model can specifically for barrels that didn't have the M4 cut.  I was talking with a guy earlier today who wanted to see the differences in the standard and this new collar so I snapped some pictures and thought I'd share.

The one on the left is the standard mount.  It is intended to be installed on an M4-profile barrel (pictured).  See the little step cut ~1/4" past the threads?  That is the "lip" onto which the collar on the left engages and then the collar is kept in place with a set screw.  The collar on the right just slips over the barrel and indexes off the shoulder behind the threads.  Thus, with the collar on the right you don't need to have the M4 cut; you just need a standard .750" barrel diameter.

Standard collar on the top and the new collar on the bottom:

This addresses the issue of barrels maybe not having the proper M4 cut for the standard 16th Model collar.  Just slip the new collar over the barrel, install the provided crush washer and then torque the muzzle brake into place.

With the thread protector in place:

These are the two rifles on which I'm using my 16th Model can.  I've played around with that new collar for awhile now and so far, so good.

Just figured some 16th Model users might find this interesting.

Very cool looking setups.

Two things:  Same mount setup would work for the 15th model, correct?

And I'm almost sure this is a no, but there is no way to permanently attach an Ops mount to get a barrel to 16, is there?

Yes on the 15th Model fitting.

I suppose a quality smith could drill through the threads of the muzzle brake.  Talk to Mike at Tornado Technologies and I bet he could come up with a quality way of doing it.

Take care,

That looks sorta like a Surefire mount! LOL

This does make the 14/15/16 much easier to use, great idea.

Mark, How far back over the barrel does the 15th model go?

Thanks

How is the POI shift with that device compared to the standard collar?

You know, its funny, as I was contemplating whether or not you could perm attach one of these, I realized it would likely be cheaper just to SBR the damn receiver.

I need to file my LLC paperwork.

I finally got around to trying both mounts for accuracy on the same rifle and found no difference.  POI was very minimal, at maybe .75" at the 4-o'clock position.  I've found that is very typical and consistent with Ops Inc cans.  Ammo was Black Hills and Prvi in both 55-grain and 75-grain.  Rifle has a 16" Bushy barrel.

That sounds like a collar Ops should make more often.
