Put together an M16 this week. (I'm an 07/02) Took it out to test fire this weekend. Would run 3 - 4 rounds then stop with a light primer strike.
The ammo used was, Wolf steel, Federal brass, and Remington brass. Problem was consistent with all ammo types. Tried running a RRA 10.5" upper with YM bolt carrier & an LMT 16" upper with LMT carrier. Problem consistent with both uppers. Used the standard buffer that came with the Vltor stock and also a 9mm buffer. Same with either. It is putting a small dimple in the primers when it stops and the hammer is up in the fired position. Sound like a sear trip problem? Maybe the hammer isn't being caught? Any ideas would be helpful. |

Are you sure it is timed right? Well I am thinking there is some sort of timing issue. How do you check the timing? What would you adjust? Do you have a numbered drill set? From the magwell put a drill bit between the bolt carrier and the barrel extension; do this until you find the closest two drill bits where one allows the hammer to drop and the other does not. What size bits does this take? Is this on a DIAS? |

| You can use that method to check any FA AR. It should release the hammer with about a #39 drill bit or a .100 pin gauge. It should not release with something much larger than that; AFAIR the spec is to not release with a .120 gauge pin but that is a little early I think. |
| My M16 will not run with a 9mm buffer, I believe it's bolt bounce, I can almost feel the bounce when the 9mm is in. Try an H or H2. Or a brand new mag with a stiff spring. It causes drag on the bolt carrier and can slow it down enough to get one to run. This drove me nuts when I first got my RR. It would run with some of my mags and not with the others. |
