Ok first of all, there is no reason whatsoever to take out the gas tube, unless your changing out a barrel. Yes there is a proper way to orient your gas tube. The end that faces out and heads into the upper reciver [that big part with the carry handle & rear sight] has a bit of a ring around it that should be clearly visible. Frankly if you dont have the proper gas block pins or arent sure of what you're doing, please take it to a gun-smith. Otherwise you may not have a hand next time you shoot your AR. |

If I understand your message, you are saying that you have installed the gas tube AND have installed the retaining pin that holds it in place. If so, the tube is installed correctly. The front end of the gas tube has three holes. The largest is the gas inlet, and the two smaller ones that are opposite each other are for the retaining pin. You can't put the tube in upside down. The offset that allows the back end of the tube to go thru the front of the reciever won't let you. You can put it in somewhat cockeyed, but then the retaining pin holes won't line up with their counterpart holes in the front sight base. Again, if you've installed the retaining pin thru the front sight base, and thru the holes in the front of the tube, the thing is in right. I do agree with mayday, though, that you really shouldn't be taking the thing apart, without knowing what you're doing |

you guys sure know how to try make a guy feel stupid i have taken apart about 3 ar15 rifles and put them back together fine if you cant figure out the ar15 and how to take it apart without a smith then i dont think you should own one!!! what im saying is yes i put the retaining pin in but are you sure you cant put the tube in upside down??????????????????????????? with the large hole facing up not down please are you sure????????????????? you stated that its not possible to put it in upside down i dont see how its impossible at all the retaining holes are in the middle of the tube as are they not?????? so i believe it can go in either way and hey why should i use a smith thats just more money out of my pocket and i am smart enough to figure it out myself as said i wasnt paying attention when i inserted the tube i was so focused on get that retaining pin in that little hole its a jp block so it has extra space in the block that allows the tube to over travel and its a pain to get it in those hole please advise im not to sure you guys are the one i should be getting my info from you guys come off a bit harsh you seem to want me to spend money at a smith when i should be teaching myself the ins and outs |

Buddy, take it down a notch. You are getting WAY too defensive here. This is an internet message board where any Tom, Dick or Morton can register and chime in. You are going to get a wide variety of folks who respond in a variety of ways. You may also keep in mind that many folks on this board have been on this board for a LONG time (thousands of posts). They know each other well and AR15.com has become much like a virtual clubhouse with a bunch of friends hanging out and jawjacking about pretty much everything. When you walk into a clubhouse do you expect everyone to treat you with kid gloves? No clubhouse I ever went into didn't have its share of good-natured and sometimes not so good natured ribbing. You accept that as part of the ground rules and if you can't take it you don't walk in the door. As far as the criticism and quality of help you were provided: 1. If you are truly as smart as you say you are it probably should be enough. 2. You seem to be expecting folks to use some form of expert clairvoyance combined with time travel to understand what you did when you installed the gas tube (as you admitted) while not paying attention, and then tell you that everything is fine. The smart thing to do right now, considering you have no idea how you installed the tube, is to take it apart again and install it again while actually paying attention to what you are doing. 3. Most guns are simple mechanical devices, if they were overly complicated, they wouldn't be reliable enough for the field. Thus any reasonably mechanically inclined individual should be able to learn how to properly build or maintain a service-type firearm. However, any semi-auto has a couple of tricks involved that can get really finicky and it really helps to either have had good instruction from someone who knows those tricks, or to spend some quality time with a good manual that will reveal those tricks to you. Even then, you'll probably end up spending some real quality time fine tuning things. I admire your initiative. You've gone out and done something that a lot of us wouldn't do. However, you need to check your attitude at the door and grow a thicker skin if you are going to ask for advice on a semi-public forum like this. |
A little punctuation wouldn't hurt either. Sgtar15 |
