But, since there are nice legal alternatives these days that are of honorable provenance, I would expect that it would not be very desirable (especially after posting it on a forum).  There is some history of items being 'tracked down' on this very forum.

Which is awesome of you to say since you're planning on selling it. Hopefully your buyer gets a refund, too.

Considering your initial post about the item's history, it is not anything i'd want in my collection.

The right thing to do is mail it back to the base.  It works, its not yours, and I'm sure they wouldn't mind it back for use.  You found it while on military property, I can't see how any reasoning would lead you to believe its ok to keep much less sell it...
