Okay Im completely new to the MP5 platform, never owned or shot one, but I want one bad, PDW style.

I have looked around and cheapos are even way out of my range.

I found recievers for sale fairly cheap...

I built my first AR with no problem, what do you guys think about building an MP5, doable or is it much more complicated than the AR. Also how available are parts? I have been looking around but I dont know if what Ive been finding includes everything.

Second question, the setup I would want would have to be legalized as an SBR, question is would it be easier to build the weapon as a pistol, make it SBRed and slap on a stock, or start out with the stock and a longer barrel then swap out barrels once its SBRed?

Cant quite explain it but I get so much more satisfaction from pulling the trigger on something I made (or assembled if you wanna get technical) then something I picked up form the shop.

You don't want to build your own.  Too complicated for an amateur.  Contact Jeff at Prusikusa.com if you want one built.

Yeah but dont forget the cost factor.  If he does em cheap its a possibility but other than that no.

#1, can you TIG or MIG (gas, not flux)
#2, 12 ton or better press

Can you say yes to both?

I have been looking around but I dont know if what Ive been finding includes everything. Parts can be found but the bolts are becoming a restricted item in Germany so German ones will be drying up soon. If I recall the carriers might or might not be restricted as well, hopefully one of the guys with a better memory then me will be along shortly.

Second question, the setup I would want would have to be legalized as an SBR, question is would it be easier to build the weapon as a pistol, make it SBRed and slap on a stock, or start out with the stock and a longer barrel then swap out barrels once its SBRed? Do the pistol. In order to swap barrels you have to press out the old one and press in a new one. As someone already mentioned, you need a press that will do quite a bit of pressure. The other option is to have soemone cut the barrel, but that gets more complicated.

Cant quite explain it but I get so much more satisfaction from pulling the trigger on something I made (or assembled if you wanna get technical) then something I picked up form the shop.

MP5K-PDW style weapons and "cheap" should not be used in the same sentence. Even to get a clone and have it SBR'd will run $1500 give or take. You wll save NOTHING by having one bulit for you because all the money you saved on parts will go straight into your buliders pocket for labor.

It sounds like you want a PDW which is a little bit different animal than an MP5. It is not as easy as just swapping barrels. Not sure what your budget is, but the cheapest way to get a PDW style weapon is to buy a clone pistol and have it SBR'd as you get the cash.

As far as parts, the bolts are restricted now, but you can get American made bolts fairly readily for a third of the price as the German ones.

Hk SP89––-$3800
Rebarrel and refinish––-$600
Stock––-$150
Tax Stamp––-$200
Mags––––$50 per mag
SEF grip housing––––$150
Vertical forgrip––––$50

Let me reword what rollin_hot said so eloquently...

If you're trying to save money, go bulid another AR or an Uzi. You don't need to start looking at HKs or their clones.

EVERYTHING in the HK world is expensive. Get used to it or get out.

If you want a fakie - check out the GSG-5PK.  Submit your paper work to ATF, when approved, add the stock and K grip.
