I found a DSA SA58 carbine with an 18 in barrel for $1300. It is NIB. Is this a good price?

Decent maybe, are you 100% sure it is a SA58 and not an STG58?

Yes it is a SA58C18.

Call DSA with the Ser# if you have not done so. They can tell you 100% don't find out the hard way that it's not the SA58 built gun.

If it really is and nothing has been swapped out and NIB that's a great price.

Those NIB prices are harsh.

If you just want a shooter, you can get a really good one on the used market for about $500 less.

What's wrong with "EL Crapo" kits?

Unless the barrel is shot out, they make very good rifles.

I've built over a dozen with numerous receiver manufactors (DSA, Imbel, CAI, Entreprise, DCI and Vulcan) and have had only one real problem, and I was able to work it out.  And it wasn't the Vulcan!

Too much DSA snobbery.  Sure, they make an excellent rifle, but you can end up with an excellant FAL and not have a DSA.

While building a FAL is a little more complicated then assembling an AR and requires more specialized tools, but its not rocket surgery.

There is a great feeling of accomplishment in taking an "El Crapo" kit, cleaning it up, refinishing it, assembling with new parts as required (922r), timing and head spacing and then launching the 1st round downrange.

Don't get me wrong, there is some stuff that I wouldn't touch.  You have to admit, sometimes you're dealing with stuff thats 40 years old.

$500 less than $1300 is $800.
