| Thinking about trading a 556 pistol for a DSA SA58. Tell me about the DSA. I know nothing of FAL's. Good trade? |
| DSA type 1, 2, 3 upper. Type 1, 2, 3 lower. New made barrel. Styer made barrel. which type of furniture. ect. We dont ask for pics to be dicks. Makes advice simpler to give, and more accurate. If you can email pics to me I can put them up for you, or text them if youd like. DSA fal are good rifles. Some are more sought after than others. Early on they used a lot of kit parts. Lots of little things to look at. A full power rifle will always serve you better than a small caliber almost rifle in my opinion. Lot more reach out and touch something power with the Fal. I have a buddy who was with the army in India when they switched from the fal to the Inas ( think Galil copy ). After a couple of years his unit started to forage fals from armories to fight the rebels there, due to the fact that their 5.56 rifles were nt killing the enemy at longer ranges or behind cover. Same reasons our troops scrounged M14 in Afganistan. So it is a matter of preference. Sight unseen I will say the fal will serve you better in the long run. |

Yeah, we're going to need more..... a lot more, in fact, to go on if you expect an answer that isn't as vague as your question. Wow, you FAL guys are .....different. Don't need to be part of this crowd. Thanks anyway. It's not like there aren't 10,00 variants, either. Ask a coffee lover "What's the best kind of coffee", or a sommelier "What kind of wine goes best with fish". See if you don't get a lot of questions from either of them. Better yet, ask a bunch of hot-rod enthusiasts about "Tradin' a Ford for a Chevy" and see if you aren't bombarded by a ton of questions about year/make/model/engine/tranny/interior/exterior/etc. Are you starting to get the picture now? FALs, even DSAs, are not one-size-fits-all rifles, and DSA has been in business long enough to produce a lot of different models. DSA used parts from different countries, as well, and the more we know the better we can answer you. Sorry if you aren't prepared to answer a few simple queries as to what you have, and what the other guy is offering, but we ask in order to be able to give you precise answers. This is all to help you out, so it's too bad you don't see it that way. Good luck with your trade... |

DSA moved their receiver manufacturing from LMT to "in house", and their quality has suffered badly. If you find a DSA SA58 with an LMT manufactured receiver, you'll be in great shape. Thank you. I called DSA, and they confirmed that it is a LMT receiver. It's just the standard 21" rifle. Is there any way to estimate value based on the little information I have? |
|
DSA rifles tend to fetch higher prices than others, so $1500-1800 as a starting point wouldn't be out of line. Their new rifles(which I would avoid)have an MSRP of $1700, so keep that in mind.
By 'receiver rail' do you mean a cover for mounting an optic? If so, then DSA makes one of the best ones on the market, but I'm not sure how much value it adds unless you intend to scope it anyway. They start at $80 and go all the way up to $150 depending on which one it is. Which one is it? FALs are in a weird place right now in comparison with other "black rifles". Ammunition costs have driven them largely from the spotlight that they enjoyed for many years, and so selling prices haven't risen as high as AR-15/AR-10s or new designs like the SCAR. Earlier DSA rifles are very well-made and deserve the higher price they command, but their recent QC issues would keep me from buying one made in the last 5 years or so. Their manufactured mags have a flaky reputation, too. You may get a good one but the next one in the box will be nothing but trouble. Stick to surplus metric mags for best results. |
|
Do it, then. FALs are great rifles to shoot as long as you can afford to feed them. Just be prepared to pay out the ass for ammo unless you have a stash already laid in. Also buy only military mags for best reliability.
The 620-APA is for a para FAL, which has a side-folding stock. Since your rifle probably isn't a para the mount is probably a 620A-A. These are rock solid mounts that won't shift zero as long as they are not removed for cleaning every time. Leave them alone and they are very stable, which is important because the FAL wasn't designed for easy use of optics. See, that wasn't so hard, was it? |

Thanks. Looks like a 620AP-A mount. I was asking $1850 for the Sig, so maybe this isn't a bad deal. The mount you specced has the option of a quick-attach/-detach brass-catcher (available from DSA), and given the price of reloadable brass nowadays--not to mention the price of even non-reloadable brass as scrap, such an accessory is WELL worth considering. Bonus points if the mount is the extended version, which is a tinch longer on the forward end. You lose the silly carry handle, but gain a seamless interface with DSA's fore-end/rail combo. |
| Dsa mags have a beta test going on over on fal files that has some good info on it. I have several of their gen 2 blued steel mags- & have had good luck with them after some polishing on the follower. If you end up with some down the road I can tell you what to do on them. Takes maybe 5 minutes a mag, dsa mags sometimes can be had cheaper than surplus due to the ify rep they have. |
