I installed a DSF forend light on my 870P. If I hold the gun vertical my action opens about a quarter inch. Is that normal?

Yeah, it's just a heavy beast. "Patrol ready", the gun should be locked and the chamber empty anyway.

If you haven't shot it yet, give your hand on the forend a good 1.5" space backward of the light, and make sure you get your body behind the gun. That forend will bite the web of your hand pretty good if you are used to the regular forends. The first night I took mine out, I thought I broke my damn hand after a couple tubes full of buckshot. It's not a problem anymore.

It's normal as the unit itself weighs a lot and the action is unlocked.

Yeah, I noticed that with simple birdshot so I had backed off quite a bit when doing buckshot, didn't have any problems.  Then fired off a couple of slugs, holy s&*t!$#%^ back off some more!  That is really the only complaint I have with this model of the forend.  The previous model SF forend that I had didn't seem to do that.

I've been using a shorter, 12" LOP stock. I may move back to a full sized stock to try and get the gun a little further out in front of me. I still zing myself every once and a while, especially when I'm trying to go fast.
