I'm looking at doing my first SBR, specifically a Daniel Defense MK18 (there's an upper at my local shop calling my name.) Based on what I've read, it sounds like SBR's can be a bit finicky sometimes due to the shorter gas systems. Is the DD MK18 good to go out of the box? I know the company has a great reputation for quality, but I figured I would ask since I really don't know much about SBR's yet. Thanks. |

Quoted: If I'm not mistaken, both the MK18 Mod0 By LMT and the MK18 Mod1 by DD come with enlarged gas ports for reliability The LMT 10.5s are specifically designed to function optimally using NATO spec 5.56mm ammo. My LMT MK18 clone runs great with NATO spec 5.56 but will not lock the bolt back on an empty mag using SAAMI spec .223. I do not believe that MK18 Mod 1 uses DD barrels/uppers––only a DD rail system. |

A lot of companies enlarge the gas port to improve cycling with weaker ammo. The downside to this is that the extra gas is harsher on the gas system––especially if you add suppressor. That is why LMT uses the smaller gas port––optimal function with the ammo that its end users will be using (5.56 NATO). The LMT is also a good choice if you plan to run a suppressor. The extra back pressure produced by the suppressor will allow the LMT to run anything. |

I recently finished my SBR with an LMT 10.5' upper. I had an issue with the bolt failing to extract the fired cases when I first assembled it, but after installing the updated extractor spring, insert, and the little donut the problem went away. Knock on Wood, I have never had a problem with any ammo that I have ran through it, both commercial .223 and Nato Spec. 5.56mm. It runs like a top! Hope this helps in some way. Take care. ETA: Just this last week I installed a DD 9.0" Lite Rail with a DD low profile gas block. I ran some comercial .233 ammo through it without any problems whatsoever.. Jody |
