I have a brand new set of Dillon dies in 9mm. As you know, Dillon uses a snap type decapping system. The idea works perfect on the other 5 sets of their dies I own, but I have a bunch of Speer 9mm once fired cases that defy the system. The pin snaps and bows the bottom of the primer, but does not remove it, I just got this batch of brass (6000 of them ) and about every 10th or 20th one, no decap. I tried running them back thru the die and got mixed results. Any one else run into this?

| I replaced my Dillon sizing/decapping die soon after getting it, not because of decapping (I had no problems), but because it does not resize far enough down the case for brass fired through a Glock to pass the ammo gage. I installed a Lee sizing die in its place, and virtually all my brass now gets properly resized... I rarely have to trash a round for failing the ammo gage. The Lee die also has a decapping pin retained by a collet, so it can (1) be pushed deeper if decapping is not 100%, and (2) will get pushed out if you have a small rock in the case (happens to me from time to time - this bends/breaks a Dillon decapping pin). Try the Lee... its cheap too. |
| I agree with using the Lee decapper die. IIRC Lee makes a universal decapper if you want to remove the primer before you tumble. I just use the decapper for caliber specific dies. I have never had to re-set a decapper pin yet in 20 + years of reloading but I have on occasion shoved a decapper right through the old primer. I have had this happen mainly on .45ACP brass. |

I know the Dillon dies don't resize as far down due to the radius, but I load on a 650, so an extra step is not an option. I am wondering if I could shim the spring in the Dillon die so it pushes harder. I use a 650 too... I shitcanned the Dillon sizing/decapping die and installed the Lee sizing/decapping die in its place (station 1). The Lee die is just the standard one out of their $25 carbide pistol die set. |

OK.........So what do you like about the Dillon seater and crimp vs the Lee offerings? I have never had any problems using the Dillon set, but am open to change. My question remains; has any one else had a problem like mine. |
