I have $100 gift card for Amazon and was going to get me a decent fixed blade.  What do you guys suggest...I was thinking maybe an ESEE, but I don't know. I would like something not too big that i can carry on my belt when camping or just out at the ranch.

Thanks

I'm no knife expert and I'm just a city slicker, but I do have some nice knives.

When I wanted a <$100 'bushcraft' type fixed blade knife, I bought a 1095 Esee 4 in venom green.  Then when I wanted a smaller one, I bought the Izula, after researching things and doing a cost benefit analysis.

They both get pretty good marks from actual field users and the VG models with blaze orange scales (#4) look pretty cool, in my gaudy opinion.

Let's face it, there are tons of quality blades out there and much like guns and/or women, things are highly preferential.

My B-Day is coming up and I'm already pricing out the Junglas in VG, lol and I already have a Tramontina machete, lol!

I carry esee when hiking my 70 mile section of the Appalachian trail and another esee in my patrol cruiser. I carry another one under my shirt under my vest. My wife carries one in her purse too.

Esee makes ugly knives, designed with one thing mind... and they do it well.

Outside of saying for "general use" I would keep it at or below 4" actual blade length I got nothing significant to add in that price range. Most of what I would suggest cost less But I will add that I am a fan of carbon steel blades. I have been unsatisfied in the edge holding abilities of every stainless blade I have ever used or owned.

Check out the Bradford Guardian 3. It's comparable to the ESEE izula, but in M390 steel, G10 and a leather sheath. It is more spendy, but it's pretty well made.

Ok, liking the Ontario RAT also....as far as the ESEE 4, should I go partially serrated, or not?

skinner
utility
boning
bushcraft

I bought a Tops knife to see if 1095 steel is for me.  Nope, too soft.  I would rather sharpen for a longer period of time less frequently, than shorter time more often.

I went with the straight blade on my Esee 4, FWIW.

Partially serrated vs. straight is a bone of contention, so go with what you like.

Serrations need a special hone to get them back to sharp, straight blades just require a basic stone to do the same.

I think I will go with the serrated ESEE 4...now to decide which blade color...tan or black...

If you're still military, you can get a pretty hefty discount by going directly to ESEE.

I vote ESEE but plain edge
