great post! where are the rest of the arfcommos? come on! i need to make/find a 6 pin to 2 pin adaptor for my mbitr so i can run a nice high speed earbud and mic. my cool factor depends on it. If you can't get a TEA earbud, each radio should come with a speaker mic and an ear bud. If you don't like the crappy ear bud, replace it with a molded Surefire earplug or even a Peltor/ AO Safety ear plug. |

I knew the title reminded me of something I'd seen before... http://www.emdomusa.com/images/CBDU/CBDU2.JPG I also copied this article to the new restricted military forum in that weapons/ equipment sub-forum. I titled that one "Get that MBITR antenna out of your mouth, I know where it's been" |

Nice write up. What type and make of radio are you using? Standard stuff from US Amateur Radio? Or mil-stuff? I use a Rockwell (Maritime version) A/N-PRC-148 MBITR, a Thales A/N PRC-148 MBITR (JEM) or a A/N PRC-152 Harris. My preference is the JEM -148, it's the most stable of the three. |

If it's a high-noise environment (like a vehicle or aircraft) then use a headset, if it's a house and you're serving a high-value target, I'd wear a headset there too, there's a good chance that will turn into a high-noise environment as well. If it's a low-noise environment, a speaker mic with an earbud is the shit. Some guys like the lapel mics, but I've found most microphones to be a little fragile. There isn't a single solution that magically fits every setting. Me? I use use a TASC-2 for water operations, an MSA/ Sordin headset for high noise environments, a speaker microphone with a surefire earplug for just walking around town and a good old fashioned handmike (or just the radio itself) when I'm driving it around in an NTV. |

Nice write-up.... Also, and I don't mean to thread hijack... but does the table below say something about pooping on a chest? http://i597.photobucket.com/albums/tt51/550cored/fivetwo.jpg Again, maybe I'm seeing things... ![]() I thought I already explained this at the end of my article? At any rate, thanks for reminding me to keep my pistol loaded and my door locked. |

I'm no radio expert, but it seems that the radios that you're using have special application. Doesn't appear to be a set up that would allow for the contact of operators in the general amateur radio community.
So, what is your operational band plan? How do you plan to use these radios in a SHTF scenario? And isn't the use of a marine radio in a non-marine situation a FCC no-no? Just asking, to better understand, and to prep better. |

It's cool brother, these are specific military models of radios used widely overseas.
The maritime radio mentioned here is just a water-resistant version of another model. It's not a marine VHF handset. As for the FCC, most of the guys (99.999% of users) that have these radios are well within their lane to tell the FCC to take a hike. Most of the time they're used, the FCC wouldn't have a clue about what's being transmitted anyway. As for the rest, none of us can really talk about signal plans in here, sorry man. |

I started reading this thread yesterday, and you inspired me to jump over to the HAM forum, since I quickly realized that us Civis have no chance at getting our hands on one of these types of rigs. Be nice, but just no dice. It is an interesting idea to apply to the prospect of a HT (handy talkie) on a HAM band though, which is something I might do down the road. So, thanks for the good info (as I assume that just because you're doing this for MBITR, it can be applied to a 2 meter amateur rig as well). |

I made a near identical rig like this about two years ago for a duel band HT that uses a BNC connector for the antenna. You can also make something like this with a longer cable if you were attempting to use a hand held radio is very uneven terrain and you needed to get something say up in a tree to get better LOS. Just keep the cable to a reasonable length, you don't want 50 feet of cable coiled up. |

MBITR goodness, without SINCGARS, HAVE QUICK, ECCM capability, ANDVT, or any of that fun stuff. |
