Say you wanted to get a plain 10/22 and planned to mod it out over a period of time. I'm thinking then just the cheapest 10/22 is fine right? Are there any differences besides in the barrel?

The best money you can spend is on a trigger job. Any old 10/22 should do.

Ruger does make a souped up version from the factory, already customized with bull barrel etc. I don't have any personal experience with them though.

If you are gonna change everything out anyways, just get the plain old model (wood stock, blued barrel).  Maybe you could even find someone who sells just the receiver and work from there.

I found a used receiver at RFC and ended up with this in about 2 months:

Well I think I'm gonna get the classic (cheap) ruger 1022 then. I want one that I can shoot today, but definitely plan on modding it in the future

the best way to start the addiction is the plane jane 10/22, get the parts to do a trigger job and extended mag release.....the auto bolt release is cool also.......by doing it all from basic the first time gives you a good idea of what you like and are willing to do, so the next time you can maybe just go from a stripped receiver......
