I can't seem to figure out how to load primers in my new (to me) 550.  It came from the previous owner all setup to load 9MM - I loading a few rounds until the primer mag became empty.  I popped open the instruction booklet to learn how to load more but I'm obviously missing something.  I load up a pickup tube, flip it upside down, pull the pin and fill the magazine tube.  Then when I pull the handle to load again, a primer isn't in the primer cup, I made the mistake of pushing down on the plastic rod in the primer tube and they all came spilling out.

I've tried a couple of times with the same result?  I know it's got to be something simple but I'm at a loss.

Thanks for any help.

take the cap off the primer feed (not the pickup tube), dump all the loose primers out, put the feed tube back in, it's keyed and will have to be indexed.  Once back in place hand tighten the cap, not too tight, that goes over the primer feed tube.

If the two allen screws that hold the priming mechanism in place are too loose or too tight you can have primer feed problems as well

ETA: make sure you have the small primer feed tube and not the large one installed

Also check the screw on the back of the primer assembly, if it's turned in to far it will prevent the cup from going back far enough to pick one up

Thanks for the input - I'll check all these and hopefully I'll be back in business.

When I first got it and set it up I loaded about 40 rounds with the primers the original owner left in there (he had it set up for 9MM) and it worked flawlessly, I didnt adjust anything different after those primers were gone.  All I did was try to load a new tube of primers and it started doing this.

Thanks again.

Good advice so far.

A wild guess, maybe a primer got turned sideways when you first loaded them and is blocking the magazine?

Now what I think is wrong,

When I have primer feed problems, it's always caused by spilled powder. (Could of came that way)

Take off the 3 allen screws that hold on the primer assembly and clean it.

Make sure the little brass wheel turns freely, and the spring has not slipped off.

Good luck

In 25 years of loading on a 550, every single time I've had primer feed problems its been junk under the primer slide causing it to stick, sometimes I can clear it up just by blowing the loose stuff off the surface, in worst case I have to remove the primer feed and slide and clean it off with alcohol.

The primers are held back by a small plastic plunger that is tensioned by a flat piece of metal.  Sometimes debris will jam that plunger in place and the primers will all fall past it.

Thanks for all the help/tips - I got it figured out though, it seems the little blue plastic cap on the primer feed tube was pretty mangled.  I think I screwed the cap down to tight or something.  I had an extra one and replaced it and just loaded up about 75 rounds and it worked perfect. (I think, I'm about to post some questions here shortly).
