I have read many posts about 650 mods etc. I have had one 650 since about 1994 which worked perfectly- my OAL is always +/- .0000001, etc. Among other calibers I load .308/7.62x51 to shoot in my Armalite (not DPMS or Les Baer) AR10's, FAL's, HK's, XM-21's, M-40, et al. Am I OK so far?????
I purchased a second 650 last year which was set up for .223/5.56 and started loading with 25 gr. of Win 748 ball powder (load data for historical purposes only- do not use this or any other internet information when loading). This load fills up to near the neck in Lake City brass. I noticed a couple of powder granules would land on the shellplate as the ram was being lowered. I checked several possible causes and found that the shellplate jumped into position as the ball detent registered into the shellplate pocket. As I watched the new press index I noticed that the shellplate jump was noticable. Compared to it, my old 650 press transitions very smoothly. I tried the bearing and spring mods and still had some powder ejected from the cases. I then adjusted the indexer block thingy on the press frame, moving it towards the rear of the press. This resolved all problems, and the bearing and spring mods were removed- all is well. Conclusion: The detent ball pulls the shellplate clockwise away from the indexer pawl, rapidly, if the indexer block is not timed/adjusted properly. RB, P.E. |
