I was bored and decided to dissect 5 factory 45 ACP rounds to see what they were made of. I still need to determine the type of powder used in each load, but all except the Denel PMP re-manufactured load had a mixture of gray and black powder. The Denel PMP had solid black powder. The bases of the JHP were covered in copper and the FMJ RN were not.

1. Federal 165g JHP - C.O.A.L 1.205 - Case Mouth O.D.. 0.4705 - Powder ? - Grains 7.0 - Factory rated muzzle velocity 1060 fps
2. Hornady 200g JHP XTP - C.O.A.L 1.1985 - Case Mouth O.D. 0.4695 - Powder ? - Grains 7.4 - Factory rated muzzle velocity 1055 fps
3. PMC 230g FMJ RN - C.O.A.L 1.2600 - Case Mouth O.D. 0.4705 - Powder ? - Grains 5.2
4. Blazer 230 FMJ RN - C.O.A.L 1.2525 - Case Mouth O.D. 0.4705 - Powder ? - Grains 5.0
5. Denel PMP 230g FMJ RN re-manufactured - C.O.A.L - 1.2620 - Case Mouth O.D. 0.4680 - Powder ? - Grains 5.8

If you know what type of powders are used in these factory loads please let me know.

Also, if you have dissected any factory loads feel free to share your data here.  Thanks

The powders may be non-canister powders which are not available to reloaders.

I know of no way to reliably identify powders beyond saying "It looks like............."

It would be very foolish to base any reloads on unidentified powders you found in commercial or military ammo.

Internet lore says that the non-canister grade version of power pistol is used in a high percentage of factory loads in .45 and 9mm.  But as was mentioned, there is no safe or reliable way to verify or assume that to be the case.

I'd be interested to see the spread in the grains for each load.  To see how consistent they are.  ie if they are all 5.0 on the dot

What he (Him?) said.

Chasing factory or military load equivalents is a recipe for unpleasantness.

Match your charge weights to published load data.

This gives a list of possibilities. I would not try matching powder by eye.

Be careful.

I agree, it's more of a curiosity than anything.

Ball ? Flake?  Extruded?
Again, all in curiosity.  Do the Re-manufactured rounds  (PMC & Denel) use non canister powders too?

i agree.  i have been coming across a bunch of winchester whitebox 308 that has been loaded very hot.  to the point of brass flowing into fluted chambers and blowing primers totally flat.  and then other boxs would shoot perfectly normal.  all bought at the same time.  wish i woulda wrote down the lot numbers.

All of the loads were the flake type with a blend of black and grey powder. The Denel powder was all black and could very well be from a canister.
