| I have been having trouble finding ARcomp powder, but last month I was able to buy some through Powder Valley, but only in 8lbs. Since I have just loaded a large run of ammo it may take a me a couple of years to use up the 8 lbs. I have saved a bunch of 1 lb empty ARcomp bottles. Would it be wise for me to divide up the 8 pounder into the smaller 1 pounders and use as needed so it stays fresh, or am I being a little too OCD about it? |

Most bottles i've seen the labels easily peel off. If the powder is NOT the same then remove the label. In your case it appears to be the same. So fill them up if you wish. What I do with mine is mark through the lot info and place my own label on there that shows date the 8lb container was opened, lot # and powder (unless powder is same as label, otherwise remove label and use your own label) Main thing...know what you have and ensure it's all labeled and zero question about what it is if a total stranger walked into your reloading room and said WOW...free powder. ;-) |

I fill 1lb containers (that I marked with paint pen for their respective powders) from my 8lb jugs, as the 1lb containers are MUCH easier to pour into my Dillon power measures. Other than that, I leave the powder in its original jug, as it takes up less space than 8 1lb containers, and I can more easily count/weigh my remaining powder so I can track what I need to restock. |
| Reloader Powder by Alliant I think packages 1 lb of powder in a 2 lb container. I had 7-8 one lbers of several types of RL Powder, same lot & date; combined them to fill each bottle to the top; just for ease of storage, save space. I doubt there is any good reason why they use bottles twice the size except that they had a bunch of bottles to get rid of. |

I do the 8# to 1# bottles. It makes it easier to load up the dispenser and takes less space on the bench since I only have the powder I am working with at the time on the bench.
The only caution I have is make sure you have the same type of powders. So H335 from 8# into H335 1#, Unique 8# to Unique 1# so on and so forth. I also mark the 1# bottle so I know it is a refill and not factory loaded. This forces me to check the lot # on the 8# if there is a recall or issue. If I have multiple 8# bottles of say Ram shot Tac then I take a picture of the 8# bottle I used to load the 1# and print that to stick on the 1# bottle. edited for spelling |

Well then, don't do it just because it's not necessary. I've loaded directly from 8 pound jugs, and poured the unused powder right back in at the end of the session. Breaking it up into smaller lots isn't going to improve storage life, relabeling old containers is subject to uncertainty anyway, and there is simply no compelling reason. |
 This is what I do. Store powder in the 8 pound keg. In a 1 pound bottle put a label of lot number it was filled with. Same powder type for 1 pound can as 8 pound jug. Open 8 pound keg has a tag that says "open", the rest of that type powder stay sealed until needed. edit. H-110 in pic if your curious. |
| Thank you everyone for the help. I think what I will do is fill the 4 one pound bottles from the eight pounder and use a permanent marker to write the lot number down on the bottles all other info is the same. I have found that most of the powder fits into the 4 one pounders, that will help a lot for storage |
