Ok, who here mounts their pistol on a drop leg panel?

advantages of doing so?

an inexpensive one so that I can test the concept out myself?

ive been thinking of removing my pistol from my war belt and running the drop leg panel.  Frees up some space, plus pistol will be out of the way if I was to don a PC/Armor carrier if it was sitting low, was bulky, or just at a bad angle on my body depending on ones stance.

I've toyed with it but never followed through. The benefit is that you can set up your thigh rig as you want versus accepting a static build and arrangement from whomever you buy one from .

I perfer a thigh rig to hips when I wear chest rigs and body armor. Otherwise I carry on the hip

understandable, as it really wont get in the way at all.  Weight distribution, or having a bulk on your thigh, I am not too fond of...a simple pistol with a spare pistol mag pouch on a thigh/leg rig I can see.  Not too fond of having 4-6, or more, AR mags down there as ive seen in some pictures....seems like a lot to have on one leg, for weight, and bulk.

My current idea is...

nearly slick PC (say, a Mayflower APC with 2-4 AR mags in cummerbund pouch)...a war belt with 3 rifle 2 pistol mags (not set in stone), now toying with moving the pistol from war belt to thigh/leg.

figure it will cut down on bulk, and distribute the gear pretty well.

other advantage I can see of a thigh rig mounted holster is an easier draw say from a vehicle.  Not a situation I forsee, but, hey its an added bonus vs drawing from a war belt holster.

I tried running one for a little while.  Ended up hating them.  the pistol has to be far enough off the panel allowing enough room for your hand to grip the pistol.  Plus I couldnt get use to the leg strap

Do you mean a MOLLE panel, with the holster attaching with a MOLLE adapter?

I have tried it mounting my Safariland 6004 to an ATS drop panel using the MLS adapter.  It didn't work well.  I don't believe that ANY MOLLE panel is stiff enough to use as a holster platform.  It just flops around, and it cants outward too much.

I have a new appreciation for the Safariland leg panel that everyone hates.  I have found that too many users fail to adjust it properly, then have a negative opinion of the system.  They also make the single strap model that you can mount even higher on the thigh.

+100  I carry a pistol on duty and have used belt and thigh rides.  I used a Safariland and a Blackhawk this past boating season, and the Safariland was hands down better than the BH.  The Safariland rode tighter, closer and stiffer than the BH.  It took a bit to get used to the little thumb release, but once I had some practice with it, it was very fast.

I have no experiance using a panel mounted holster, but having used a thigh rig all summer, I hated going back to a belt ride for the winter.  They are expensive little bastards, but worth the money.

This is the closest I got to what you are thinking about, and it did not end well.

The material of the panel is not stiff enough.  It does not matter if it is strapped to your leg; it will bunch up and complicate your draw.  This rig lasted about two weeks.

I briefly tried a TT holster mounted to a thigh molle panel and it was not a stable platform, as others have already indicated.

I then purchased a Safariland 6004 which I have used ever since.

I'm actually very happy with this configuration.  I've tried a few different ways but this is my favorite.  As long as you mount the holster as high as you can, it doesn't affect your movement at all.

I carry a FiveseveN in an AR15 magazine pouch on a 5.11 leg panel.  I was going to just use the mag pouch until I got my Blade-Tech holster but I actually like using the mag pouch a lot.

Here is another one I used to use.  I used the same 5.11 MOLLE Leg Panel with a Glock 19 and Serpa Holster.

That's exactly the route I'm going. PIG pc with 4 AR mags on it and 2" nylon duty belt with 2 pistol mags and 2 AR mags and G17 w/ TLR1 in a thigh holster.
