I just had the random thoughs of loading dummy rounds by taking unprimed brass, and filling the primer hole with hot glue so that there is no extra wear on the firing ping, or especially the striker on my XD.

Is there anything better to use then hot glue? I was thinking about cutting rubber and supergluing it, but that would be a pain in the ass.

How about repriming with a already fired primer?

A flexible epoxy, it's probably more durable than hot glue.

This is what I've had on all the dummy rounds I've got.

Shoe Goo.  Put a dab on a tooth pick, put the dab in the primer hole.  Let the dab be flush with the bottom of the cartridge case, maybe a p-hair taller.  When it dries, it'll shrink a little.

If you reload you can easily make your own 'snap caps'. Clean, resize, deprime your brass. Seat a bullet, crimp. Now fill the primer hole with some brightly colored RTV. Let it set-up overnight and you've got easily identifiable "snap caps".

If you do that then the spent primer isnt really absorbing any of the impact.

yup, seems to be the best thing to use.. I trim the larger harder ones. the pencil erasers tend to be alittle softer and break up after a while

These can make for cheap dummy rounds for various purposes, but remember, don't mix them in with live ammo for live fire malfunction drills.  That's a good way to get a projectile stuck in the bore followed by a kaboom.

The good ones are only $1 a piece and it's easy to tell it's a dummy:
