I am refinishing a mossberg 500 for my dad that has a really crappy spray paint job that is peeling and flaking off. Do I need to sand off the paint first? I am planning on having it media blasted, but didn't know if that would take the paint off for me so I wouldn't have to sand it. I am also adding a surefire forend grip and speedfeed stock, do I need to media blast those as well before I duracoat them? |
For pre-DuraCoat you want to use Aluminum Oxide, NOT glass beads. I would use at least a fine (150-mesh) size grit or finer. If I had the choice I'd go with 220-mesh grit. You just wanna very lightly rough up the surface, not erode away the metal! If you don't feel comfy doing this open the yellow pages and find a local grit blaster. He'll be happy for the work. As to which paint stripper - anything you can find at the hardware store should remove the average bubba paintjob. |
Does it make any difference if I use alumahyde? |
