I'm planning on building an EBR clone with an 18" barrel in the near future and was wondering which platform would be the best to start with:

Springfield Scout Squad with std 18" barrel
or
Springfield Standard M1A with aftermarket 18" barrel

Basically, is the stock 18" barrel on the Scout Squad good or would I be better off with the cheaper standard 22" M1A and buying an aftermarket 18" for it?

Thanks

How much do you want to spend and what ammo do you plan to shoot?

The factory Scout barrel is great and IMHO, the best 18.0" upgrade barrel is the  medium heavy Crazy Horse barrel
from SEI. NOTE: The medium heavy barrel is about 1 lb heavier than the standard profile Scout barrel and requires
a newer production SAGE EBR stock. Read more about the SAGE EBR and different barrels at M14HDW.US

The factory Scout 18" barrel is Great!
H20MAN's questions are good. Figure those out.
Then I would ask you, Is weight a factor for you?
When you say you want to build an EBR clone, are
you talking about a Mod 0, or a Mod1?

Thanks for your input guys. I'm new to the .308 world so I have no idea what ammunition I would be using. I would prefer to keep the weight down but not at the expense of superior performance, that is if the SEI barrel would yield a noticeable difference in performance in comparison to the factory 18". As to Mod 0 or Mod 1, that was going to be my next question as to which chassis is better. I like the Mod 1 chassis in appearance slightly more, but I'm not sure whether the Magpul stock is as good a setup as the Mod 0 in regards to its adjustability. But like I said, this is all new to me so opinions from experience are extremely helpful.

I prefer the mod0, but I am also philosophically opposed to the trend to stick ugly as sin M4 stocks on anything and everything.

The mod 1's are lighter, H20 says like 2lbs.
He would have to answer on the ajustability comparison
between the Mod0 and the Mod1. I've heard nothing but
good things about the Magpul stock with the cheeck riser.
I ordered My Mod1 last week, and right about now I'm ready
to chew my arm off. Waiting SUCKS

The Mod 0 does offer a bit more adjustability over the Mod 1... it's also about 2 lbs. heavier than the Mod 1.

What is the overall weight of the Mod 0? Without any attachments

It's locked up in the vault right now, but I remember that mine weighs approximately 13 lbs. without accessories.

Note: My Mod 0 is a full length EBR and it has a medium heavy Crazy Horse barrel.

I would go on the exchange here or m14forum and look for a used M1A Scout with the 18in barrel then get a MOD 0 stock for it, put those together along with the Sage scope mount and a scope of some type.  I say the MOD 0 because it is more adjustable to the user due to the stock not being an M4 type.  after you get it how you want it and save up at least an extra $1,000 have it sent to Smith Ent in Phoenix AZ and have him put one of his barrels on it and M80HT heat treat it at the very least.  if you have a lot of money to spend have him do even more work to it anything he does will be well worth it.  as soon as I can I am going to do this to my M1A, I have found that you get what you pay for.  as far as the ammo goes, using  GOOD Mil surplus with the Springfield 18in barrel you can get out to 500yds with ok performance (I was on a steel silhouette range hitting a ram at 500yds so it was a big target).  Ammo is going to play just as big a role in accuracy as the barrel length, 168gr bullets are going to shoot a lot better than surplus 147s.  if you want to shoot at around 1,000 yds get a match 22in barrel but 500yds and in 18 is a great choice, I have herd of SEI 18s shooting out to 800yds with good match grade ammo so I guess it's possible.  it all comes down to your budget, do you mined me asking what you have to spend on something like this?

I'm trying to keep it under 3 grand (under $2500 if I can), not including an optic. I have a few AR's and I'm looking for something that can reach out a little further, but at the same time is good for closer in stuff. I'm planning on using a Nightforce NXS 2.5-10X24 with a Doctor Reflex on top, if that tells you anything about its purpose.

Here is mine, got the stock yesterday and put every thing together today.
one word AWESOME.
I would say a pound or more lighter than the TROY MCS that I was using first.

Does the mod 1 stock have a comfortable cheek weld when using a scope? Is it even high enough with the Magpul 3/4" cheek riser and low scope rings?

Magpul offers 3 different Clip on cheek riser for CTR stocks. LINK

I know they offer 3 sizes, I was just asking about the 3/4" because it is the highest and I was wondering whether it is even high enough for a comfortable cheek weld using the sage cantilever scope mount and low rings. I hear you are the guy to ask for all things M1 and I think I've seen that you a have a mod 1, so I really appreciate your input.

I'm using the middle cheek riser on this one and it works just fine for me, but your bone
structure may require a shorter or taller riser. The mount is LaRue with SEI LOW rings.

Is there a height difference between the LaRue and the Sage scope mount? Where do you get the LaRue, I can't find it anywhere?

You can order them direct from LaRue (LT-608) and they are a hair taller than the SAGE mount.

LaRue LT608

Length of usable rail: 5.75"
Weight: 6.8 Oz.

SAGE M14DCSB

Length of usable rail: 6.75"
Weight: 8.8 Oz.
