I just picked up this parka to use as a bad weather field jacket. Can anyone tell me what gen this is? It appears to use some type of zip in liner, I'm assuming some sort of fleece? Any other info old also be greatly appreciated.

I used one in Colorado for many years, and it was a great gore tex shell. It got to the point to where it would not repel water anymore and I had to retire it- plus I grew out of it....

I'd love another one. The pit-zips are fantastic and really needed for any serious activity. From what I remember, the lining would be a whatever you layered under it, and nothing zipped into it.

This one has an inward facing zipper to zip in some sort of liner.

Generation 1 Gore-Tex parka. They also came in DCU, Desert camouflage.

Excellent jackets, but I do like generation 2 a little better because the hood can be rolled up and zippered inside. But I believe the generation 2 one's only came in ACU.

This makes a really nice add-on if yours has the snaps. Sorry I bought the last XL...

Also there are two breast pockets (stumbled on those one day...)

Heres a link to the best info on it that I've seen around...

I don't know if anyone else remembers this, but the Generation I was discontinued for a reason. I am fairly certain this was in the 2004-2005 time frame, as I was appointed/voluntold acting Supply Sergeant for my Company at the time. Some memo came out about some long-term studies involving failing seams, leaking seams, and of course the problem of the hood dumping water/snow/debris if one did not properly minimize it. The hood didn't stow, so I don't know how else to describe it. Anyhow some memo was floating around about all of the Gen I problems that were fixed with the introduction of the Gen II, and some brass somewhere blew a gasket because his troops were being given these inferior things, and he really pushed for us to get GII. But the GII was a USMC item at the time (I was Army). Somehow, I ended up driving to a post far away to pick up boxes of the GII parkas that someone had allocated to my unit...those were all we ever got, as I recall.

Just my $.02.

Everything I read about these says they didn't have a zip in liner and were made to be layered but this one has the zipper for a liner.

I bet one of the black Polartec fleece liners will zip into that.  Even a North Face Denali probably will.  I have a Navy goretex parka in their new camo, and my North Face zipped right in like it was made for it.

I have a Gen 2 in woodland. Looks very similar to the one above (except has the zipper for the hood).

This is correct.  Long story short:  Gen I ECWCS lacked the seam-sealing tapes now common.with all good Gore-Tex items.  Primary complaint areas were the sew-throughs alongside the front zipper, but any sew-throughs are suspect.

EASY fix for this is to buy some water-based seam-sealer, and to treat BOTH sides of any and all sew-throughs.  About $10 for the seam sealer, and they give you a foam brush..  Get it at canpmor, ems, rei, and so forth.

For best results, launder jacket first, and rinse twice, at least.  Apply seam-sealer inside and out to all sew-throughs.  Then apply Durable Water Repellant (DRW) to exterior of garment (same vendors, same mfrs, even).  Do it in this exact order.

The rest of the problems with the garment were almost all due to troops not wearing the thing properly, or  not donning it soon enough after precip began, or not using the hood.

In short, if you have a Gen I that you like, all it's innate flaws can be corrected easily and cheaply.   I've read the memo referenced above, and have treated my Gen I ECWVS as detailed here.  It's GTG now.

I got issued a Gen I parka in 93 when I PCS'd to Fort Hood. I'd previously seen them in late 92 at McClellan as all  the permanent party had transitioned to them already.

They were great rain jackets. While I never did get a set of pants, the parka kept my upper body bone dry while directing traffic in a monsterous rain storm. Below the waist I was soaked through.

However without the layer and/or liners they don't block the wind for shit. I learned early on to use a five button wool sweater and my BDU top under it.

But even with all it's faults or limitations, I currently own two.  The original from 93 and one I picked up last year. The oldest one has lost it's waterproofing but I plan on taking Raf's advice and get it right again.
