I am looking for opinions on mounting an EOtech 552 with the ballistic reticle for 50BMG onto a Serbu single-shot BFG and shooting surplus/remanufactured military machinegun ammo.

Would this be a solid combination out to 400 yards or so?

Depends on your target.  Just for fun launching pyrotechnic projectiles at large, and/or clearly visible targets, sure.  Any kind of precision work, no.

Are you only going to shoot out to 400 yards? That is a like having a Ferrari and saying I'm only going to drive it in  the parking lot. You need to think "what is the maximum yarding I'm going to shoot."

Go with some flip up iron sites...

For about 400 bucks, you could go with a SWFA SS 10x42 mildot scope & rings, including the Butler Creek scope covers & have better magnification than the EOtech.

Like Realwar said, you could also go with flip up sights  to 400. If you are shooting surplus ammo to that distance, your groups won`t be that great. 400 yards isn`t that far out for iron sights.

I put a 50bmg acog on my Serbu single shot, it is a badass combo!

Heck, I'd even opt for a Bushnell 3200 10x40 MilDot before the 552.
Barret is shipping these factory with some rifles...with a street price around $200...add some Burris Xtreme rings and you're done for under $275.

An Eotech seems like a waste, to me, for a big fifty...
