If treated and stored well, armor can last indefinitely. The "expiration" date is more the warranty/CYA date the company puts on there for liability and lifespan under heavy use.

This is my understanding as well.

OP - they do not really "expire"  it is related to the warrany like some stated above.

What is the reason for the question though?  If it is a concern about plates you bought new and have owned for a while.... and you are aware of the condition/ treatment then it is not an issue.  If you are trying to tie "expiration date" to the quality of a used set of plates it is not a good measure of the useful life remaining.  Need to know the true condition (especially for ceramic plates) and approach with caution if that is the case.

"Never issued" long term storage as a lot of the Gammas are on the market - same as new if they come from one of the reputable dealers.

Does this answer what you are asking?  Hope this helps.

My ceradyne side sapi's passed inspection there in 2011 as well, though they look essentially new so I dont think they were ever issued.

My unit is getting rid of all plates older than 5 years.

ETA: I am aware of 20 year old plus soft armor stopping all rounds for which it was origianally rated.  I have never heard of similar tests on plates, but I am not aware of plates failing.  In fact, the only body armor failures I have heard of (not stopping rated rounds) was soft armor made with Zylon, which degraded much more rapidly than anticipated.

A lot depends on composition. Old glue can lose it's tenacity. Unprotected PE components can age and become brittle. Etc., etc.... it all depends on what the plate is made from and how it has been treated. There are a wide range of possible reasons an older plate can fail.
